I received a C in freshman year of high school. How large will its repercussions be on my future?

twoinanddone, I am taking the only math class offered for freshmen at my school. :frowning: I wasn’t allowed to choose the class, but thank you anyways

aroundhere, thank you for the advice! I am switching to a slower math track next year (the soonest I can). I’m keeping in mind that I’m still adjusting and feeling the rhythm for high school, so I am hopeful that I will be able to succeed with more effort.

I mean if you are taking it as a freshman good on you. Your load seems really tough and they will definitely understand that(given ap gov, etc). If you aren’t a math wiz then definitely slow down next year because I doubt you are going to want to take calc 3 as a senior. I’m taking calc 1 and 2 rn as a senior and it’s fine for me but I know people that are taking calc 3 as a senior and it really sucks but hey it’s ur decision if you put in the work you will definitely see results.

It’s been my belief that you either have it or you don’t with math in the sense that you are either “math minded” or not. I know a lot of people who do great in math but really struggle with initially understanding the concepts and then there are people who get it right away almost every time. Either way, it’s all dependent on the effort you put in and whether you really want to put that much work in with the load you have

In my opinion algebra two is essential for the following math courses as well. If you really understand the basics of algebra two(trig, unit circle, being able to solve complex functions algebraically, other stuff that I can’t remember) it will greatly help because it’s all building upon wha you are learning right now

I’m a senior at a high school similar to yours - it’s a private, well-known academically challenging college prep school. My freshman year, I got a low C in a class, but the rest of my grades were good. I still finished high school with a 3.9 unweighted GPA and was accepted to my top choice school. Remember this: colleges would rather see you do mediocre in a very advanced class, than do good in an easy class. They will notice that you challenge yourself and take advanced classes more than the grade, especially freshman year. Don’t worry about it

EthanAz1, thank you for your advice! I am not taking a math class next semester but I will be taking year-long precal next year, so I am trying to slow down a bit

ygo432, thank you so much! Best of luck to you at college!

I’ve decided to finish the thread. Thank you everyone for your advice; I’ve definitely taken it to heart and decided what I need to change. I am very grateful for all of your support!
