I received my PSAT scores

My 2011 scores are Math-61, Verbal-47, Writing-41

My 2010 scores are Math-59, Verbal-43, Writing-42

Any specific tips to get my scores up. I did horribly, I know. I didn't take any practice test or study sessions for the SAT at all ever. Actually this year I forgot i signed up for the PSAT, and was unprepared on that day.

My school next week is holding SAT prep sessions every Saturday which i plan on attending. Though Im doing this is there anymore I can actually do. Im aiming to get around a 2000 on SAT. What more can I do, Im open to options. Currently Im taking IB Math Studies and English 3 honors. Last Year i took Algebra 2 honors and AP Language and Composition. Im a Junior right now.

Bump, please i need help.

Okay, first don’t panic because PSAT does not go into your record. You can certainly receive a boost in your scores if you do some practice problems over a period of time. Memorize some words, study a grammar book, and keep reading, reading, reading.

Take heart. My D did not do a whole lot better and she did some preparation (not a lot but some). She is signed up for Kaplan since she thought she would be more motivated if she went with friends so there are 4 kids going to an intensive course to prep for the March SAT.

I am hoping she will get up closer to 1800 but only a few people really improve through these classes. I have asked her to take the April ACT figuring the Kaplan will help on three sections and she can do some self preparation for the science section of the ACT. Many, many people say that the more linear thinkers do much better on the ACT. There is a red book called the “real ACT” that has real tests that you can take. You may do much better on that test–you have to manage your time well but the questions are much more straight forward. My D is a straight A student in the IB program taking physics and precalc etc. She tests horribly but it is a poor indicator of how well some students will do in school. My S with a low b average is a test whiz and after attending Kaplan scored a 2250. If you don’t take a course, take advantage of all the freebies on the web. Kaplan and Princeton review offer free tests go to their websites to see the “events near you”…you can take an ACT or SAT online at the official website and see which test looks best, do question of the day, etc. My D is overwhelmed with school so she felt she had to be forced to prep …thus the class. However, if you tell yourself that you will get up and work from 10-12 every saturday and sunday just doing these practice tests and prep, you will have done a lot of preparation. PIck a test date and sign up now and work out a study schedule. Best of luck. 18 months from now no one will care what score you got. Just remember, there are hundreds of good schools, some test optional, that will be happy to have you enroll.

Don’t stress, I got something around a 150 on the PSAT, but I got a 2000 SAT and a 34 ACT. Just get the blue book and do a lot of practice.

All right thank you guys for the info. I have a College Prep class as a class, we do nothing in there but we do have the Red ACT book. Im going to give it a try. We also happen to have grammar books, im going to study it more closely.

I will try to take advantage of the free things, that’s my 2011-2012 mentality. If it is available i might as well use them.

I bought my D the Kaplan ACT prep book it was about $25 and well worth the money. Not only practice tests, but lots of test taking tips. They have one for SAT as well.

“Just get the blue book and do a lot of practice.” YES! YES! YES!
