I recently had my mother apply for a parent direct plus loan and got denied?? now what?

So I am in a bit of a rut financial wise, I did however apply for my fasfa, and received a state grant that will be enough to pay for my classes, the last thing I need right now is enough money for dorms, food and etc. I start in the fall and am rushing everything trying not to make any mistakes. I applied for a direct plus loan and it seems that I have got accepted though my single mothers application was denied due to repossession within the last 5 years? probably due to her ex screwing her over on a car payment, can I still get enough financial aid to go to college? :frowning:

Call the financial aid office at your college. You will be eligible for an additional loan under your own name, which they can process. If the additional money is not enough, they may have other funds available as well.

Thank you! I’ll try that out tomorrow. Is there anything else that you recommend I try, really looking for subsidized loans right now but anything works.

The max subsidized loan will not change.

I was reading up on the max and if my mother is denied the plus loan, the max increases to $9,500 correct?

It depends on your year in school. If you are a freshman, that is the total for all subsidized and unsubsidized loans.

The Direct Loan for a freshman is $5500. Of that, only $3500 can be subsidized. The balance is unsubsidized.

Because your parent was denied a Plus, you are eligible for an addition $4000 in unsubsidized Direct Loans.

So do you think there is still a chance of me going to college and getting enough aid?

Well…you have an additional $4000. Do you have enough to pay the balance of your bill?

The state grant was $3100. Only enough for classes. Currently looking where to find money for rooming and food and books.

You should have a financial aid package by now. How much aid did you get and how much more do you need? You can’t borrow money on your own, so if you weren’t awarded enough aid to cover the costs of this school then it may not be affordable.

So…you have a state grant for $3100, and $9500 in loans? Anything else? That’s $12,600.

How much does this school cost per year?

Well, I had a mishap with the previous fasfa i filled out, i had to do it over again a few weeks ago so i imagine things are still processing, as i did just apply for some loans today. i have received $3,146.00 so far, that’s just from a state grant when applying to fasfa. collecting $5,000 to 10,000 more would be nice

What state are you in? Do you know your FAFASA EFC and/or the cost of attendance of this school?

Did you do a new FAFSA or just amend your previously submitted one to this school?

Why are you trying to resolve the financial aid issue in mid July? The deadline for most schools is much earlier for institutional aid consideration.

What was your FAFSA EFC? Any chance it was VERY low?

my efc was 025656. i am from pennsylvania and plan on going to clarion university. it is $24,502 per year. my recent fasfa was sent, and there deadlines are rolling and financial aid should end at the end of august, i know it’s pretty late

Since your FAFSA EFC is over $5k, you won’t qualify for a Pell grant. Does Clarion offer merit aid? If so, do you qualify? How much can your mom pay per year?

How can tuition to a $24k/year school be $3100? That doesn’t seem right.

I’m only getting $1,573.00 per semester and classes are around $220. clarion does offer merit aid. was checking out them out and for some of them it seems like i do but it seems like they have already expired :frowning: and not much, we have a really low income since 2015 which is what the fasfa wanted.

Clarion costs over $22k/year. Tuition is ~$11k, and room and board is another $11k. That doesn’t include books or fees. So far you have $9500 in loans (the $5500 federal and $4k for denial of PLUS loan) and a $3k state grant?

How much lower was your mom’s 2015 income than her current income? Some schools may take drastic income changes into consideration, but Clarion’s grants seem small ($1-3k), so they may not have money to give. Are there schools you could commute to from home?

clarion currently only says that i have $3,146.00? my mom made more in 2015, but in 2016 and 2017 she made a lot less. there is a school in town but i would rather not go there due to reviews on the education they have. plus i am still waiting to be accepted which i guess should be soon.
