Hey guys so as the title says I am now faced with kind of an awesome problem and I have to choose between UCLA and NYU for acting. I still don’t know which Studio I got into for NYU but even if I got into my top one I would still be lost. I will continue doing research on my own but I wanted to post here to gather your guys’ thoughts about this. How do I go about making a choice between NYC and LA? Both are amazing cities to be in as an actor. I guess I’m looking toward the place that I will prosper in the most. NYU is a BFA acting program and UCLA offers a BA in theatre with a focus in acting. Both sound really good to me despite their differences. I like the flexibility and opportunities that a BA gives while at the same time maybe a BFA would make me improve and become a much better actor. I don’t know what I’m gonna do and I would like some help.
Thank you guys!
After graduation are you more interested in Broadway or in television? I believe I read that there are more NYU graduates working on Broadway than any other school so you would likely make some excellent connections. In LA, of course, there is more television work. Movies I would say you could do from either city. Congrats on such great options!
Just to note I applied to during my gap year (grad class 2016, idk if that’s important):
So ideally I would want to advance to film and although I love performing on stage in school productions, the idea of making it big in broadway (although a fat chance and would be totally awesome) scares me because I don’t know if I see myself doing 100 shows of the same production. I do love the stage though, but maybe not to the extent of focusing my acting career on it. I would ideally want to go into film and television as well (you said LA would be good for TV) but I’ve been told NYU has a better acting program as it is conservatory style. I was also told that the F in BFA is extremely important in the industry. The question is how, and can I live without it? I still haven’t been placed in my tisch studio which is also an extremely decisive factor. I would lean towards NYU if I got into Stella Adler/Atlantic/Lee strasberg. Do you have any advice with regards to studio placement. I am very against the Experimental studio and am unsure about meisner. I have a feeling the studios are ranked, which they might not be, but its the vibe I get. Basically I am still extremely confused, but can you reply and maybe clear up some uncertainty and/or elaborate more on what I have mentioned? If you can’t really add anything to it then I understand. I may be assuming your expertise with NYU a lot hahaha, sorry about that Thanks for reading
My daughter is a junior at Tisch, she did 2 years at Strasberg and is at Stonestreet doing Film Acting and Directing now. Your leanings are correct and if you are interested in film and television then I would say to go to UCLA. If you love NY and are more interested in Broadway and stage then go to NYU Tisch. That being said, if you are intellectual and want a good liberal arts education then UCLA is the one. However if you want the best all around go to Tisch. But if you like the beach…I hope this helped lol.
