I screwed up, now what?

Hey guys, I'm just looking for some advice.

Some background: I graduated high school with a 4.0. After high school, I started out at a 4 year university. I was only there for a semester, before I decided to go to community college instead. I left with a 2.9 GPA. My first semester at community, I did very well and had a 4.0. The following semester, a lot of stuff happened in my personal life and I failed 2 classes, which brought my GPA down to 3.0. The next semester, I stopped attending my classes. My GPA is now 2.67.

I originally planned to take a break from school this entire year. But now I'm thinking about continuing. I haven't fully made up my mind yet, and I am at least going to take off the Fall semester to think about it.

If I do go back, I don't want to go to community. I think part of the reason I started failing my classes was that I wasn't offered any support there, the classes were easier than high school, and it was always go to class then go home, nothing else. I would prefer to go to a 4 year instead.

My question is, can I even go to a 4 year considering I failed 4 classes and my GPA isn't all that great? Do I even have a chance of getting into a state school? Would it be better to stay at community for another semester, get my shit together and my GPA up, and then apply to 4 years? That's what I'm thinking would make the most sense, but again, I want to avoid going back to community if at all possible.

Eh, personally I would suggest going back to CC for one more semester. Retake those failed classes, or look into academic renewal or something, and get your GPA up. Getting rid of the failed classes will make you a stronger applicant (better GPA), it’ll prove that you can succeed, and it’ll be an upward trend.

Depending on which school system you’re going for, transfer applications might be due as early as November. Figure out your system, and when you would have to apply for the upcoming year. Chances are it’s too late now, unless they do rolling admissions and you can apply for Spring term.

Anyways. I’d say go to CC for another term to get your grades up. It’ll make you more competitive, and that will allow you to transfer to a better school. It also gives you more time to work out what you want to do, figure out your goals, and get back on track with academics. That said, you need to really commit if you want to go that route… more failed classes will severely hurt your chances, so you’d need to do well. Yeah, it’s CC, it’s not fun, but “it’s too easy” is a poor excuse for slacking off.

Also, if you go back to the CC route (you could also apply to 4 year schools now and see where that goes), look into clubs at your CC. Sure, it won’t be as exciting as other schools and there won’t be as many choices, but it might give you something a little more social to do after class.
