I struggle with organization and time management.

I’m a music performance major who also happens to be a working student. This is my schedule this semester:

MWF: class from 8:50-3:05 back to back with 15 minutes in between each. Free after 3:05 though with no other commitments.

TTH: class from 9:55-11:50, noon free, Clarinet lesson 1-2, 2:00 leave for work, work 3-11:30. These are my worst days because once I get out of class I have no time to do anything except for my lunch hour at work. I have no down time on these days and find myself getting to bed late because of my 30-45 minute commute home. I’m struggling to keep up.

Part of my problem is i spend too much time on one thing because i want everythinh i do to be excellent. I don’t know any shortcuts. Do you have any advice?

You have an intense schedule. If my son had this schedule I would encourage him to focus on schoolwork hard core on the weekends. Also, maybe on MWF you could stay on campus until 6 pm to squeeze in more study time. Take a dinner break, and work some more at night.

Perfection is the enemy of completion. Yes, excellence is an admirable and noble goal, but not to the point that it brings on panic and inaction.

You might want to consider Cal Newport’s book/blog. He does have some good strategies!
