I think i have done it...got my college list

This is not a chances thread, but I think I have come up with my college. I just wanted to see if any one out there had some thoughts-what I could add or if they been to any of these schools.

I expect a lot of people to not know what schools I am talking about, I am not a true CCer just a normal student applying to college, hoping to beat the odds and be lucky.

Just some normal info
From the Midwest-IL, in a town that counts somewhat as rural/suburb
Average GPA-3.38 (however I did a independent study this year-my teacher went on maternity leave and forgot to put in my grade-so I hope it may go up one or two points)
I go to a competitive private high school(class of 50) almost everyone goes to college-except for one kid this year he broke the record.
ACt-25 (I'm horrible at standardized tests-I tried studying over the summer but my science section keeps getting lower and lower-I don't think I"ll retake it)
AP
4-EURO
5-USH-got this yesterday! :)

I am looking for a liberal arts college that is affordable and where I have a chance at getting a few scholarships. From past experiences I know I can work in any environment if I apply myself. Size-around two thousand or less but I am applying to a mid-university just to add some diversity. Midwest and East coast I am mainly looking at.

I am really looking though at schools, that provide an environment where learning is central, where a undergraduate comes first. I may also want to have access to internships. I know there are a lot of more perstigious schools who give this but I am not a stong enough canidate. I also want there to be a stong community service program.

Also, I will be majoring in History-school needs to have a stong department.

College List
Lawerence University-visiting on Friday-first choice
Beloit College
Goucher College-only school out of midwest
Carroll College
Loyola University of Chicago-only biggish school-my mom. my dad. and a uncle went there so legacy power!
University of Evansville-out of all the schools this seems to have the strongest history department
Rockford College-my hero went here Jane Addams-very activist centered
College of Lake County-my ultimate safety a community college

Right now I have eight schools-am I playing it too safe or too risky? Has anyone been to these schools?

Should I add one or two-thinking about Earlham and Allgenehy(sorry spelled wrong)
Anyplace else I should consider?

It sounds like a great list to me. Earlham does seem like another good fit for you. I don't know much about Allegheny, though.

Thanks! I've already set up who will be recommending me and one of my teachers graduated from Earlham and is a very involved alumni-so that may help me a lot when it comes to applying. But I feel like if I apply to Earlham it will be too much. A lor of my schools are not on the common application so its harder to keep track of applications.

Have you been to Earlham or any other of these schools?
Anyone else?

Students on CC, are some of the brightest in the nation, definetly not me at all. But I honestly can use some help and perhaps my list can help some of you who are having a hard time limiting yourself to schools.

I just wanted to enclose in this post what caused me to come up with this list. At my school you are not allowed to meet with the college counslars until 11th-there are only two. But once you start-it is a very intensive process, over the summer they come up with your college list based on conversations and chances. Then they send it to you, this is what they sent me:
(written and copied from the letter-this is what my college counslar stated)
I'm going to be a little conservative in identifying the chances by each individual college-- but I would have some confidence that unless things were to be really different in the coming year that you should expect to receive at least 3 offers of admission with some opportunity for one or more additional offers. Five offers would not surprise me--but I feel confident that at least three should happen, especially if you have a solid

Bates - If you were to apply Regular Decision without test scores, I think you would have slightly less than a 50/50 shot. So, better than their admit rate would suggest but as you note it is a reach (although one that I like).

Earlham - If you were to apply Early Action, I think you would have a better than 50/50 shot, probably in the 70% range.

Goucher - If you were to apply Early Action, I think you would have a better than 50/50 shot, probably in the 80% range.

Lawrence - If you were to apply Early Action without test scores, I think you would have a 50/50 shot. Again, this is a better shot than their admit rate might indicate.

Wheaton College - If you were to apply Regular Decision, I think you would have a 50/50 shot. This is about what their admit rate suggests. I think you would get a slight bump from being out of their geographic region.

Whitman College - If you were to apply Regular Decision, I think you would have slightly less than a 50/50 shot. If you were to visit, I think that your opportunity for admission would increase some (but still be solid without).

Mount Holyoke - If you were to apply Regular Decision, I think you would have somewhere between a 25% and 50% chance of admission. If you applied Early Decision, that would go up some but probably still somewhere between 25% and 50%.

There was also Beloit which they forgot-but anyway....my point is

How in the world can these chances be true?

!) My college counslar is on drugs
2) My college counslar has a secret ambition to make me miserable
3) My college counslar does not know anything-I highly doubt that he was a admissions officer at Kenyon.

I just don't get it, I mean this is just a conservative evulation, but compared to what I have seen thiese chaces are especially high for a person with a 3.38 and a 25. I just didn'y know what to believe so I came up with this list.

In general i am very confused.

If merit aid is important, you could try Depauw in Indiana. It's small...about the size of a large LAC, and they actually have a merit aid calculator on the site.

Some of my friends are applying there so I have heard a lot about it from them. It does not sound like me though. I'' check out the merit aid calculator though-thanks

I think Allegheny would be a good addition - they definitely promote internships.
