okay so my HS career wasn’t to great. I get great grades but for math I got put into a double year algebra which i aced last year and still am acing but i cant get out of it so that is a problem right there. Nothing much i can do about it unfortunately. My other classes i am in regulars even though i should be in honors but once again i am kept out of it which is fine. Next year imma be in 11th grade and i am planning on taking AP History which i am prepared for. I was planning on taking AP English but for some reason my teacher said i am not ready for. Keep in mind all quizzes I get 100% and my grade last quarter was a 90 (97 but the unfair quarterly pulled me down) and this quarter it was a 93 (98 but once again unfair quarterly’s) I think if I can pull of a A to A+ in regulars I can pull of a B in AP. My teachers are keeping me outta this. What do you guys think?
What is an “unfair quarterly”? What grade do you need to have to get into an AP? If you’ve met it, ask your parents to speak to your GC. If you haven’t met the requirements, that’s the reason why you haven’t been placed in AP classes.
Your writing seems like it could use some work, so maybe work on that the rest of the year and try to qualify for APs your senior year. Does your library have AP books? You could study for them on your own and take the exams.
Did you ask your teachers what they meant when they said you were unprepared? How about offering to work with them on the areas they are worried about and seeing if they might conditionally let you sign up for the class, given that you make improvement by the end of the year.
I wouldn’t be so quick to chalk it up to “racism and stuff.” For whatever reason, your teachers don’t think you’re ready for the AP classes you want. You need to talk to each of these teachers and ask them why. Maybe you’ve been coasting through the class without class participation, which is integral in both (you didn’t specify, so I’m assuming USH) APUSH and AP Lang. Maybe the “unfair quarterly’s” are the teachers’ way of gauging your readiness for AP classes. In that case, don’t chalk them up to being unfair: study hard and get a high A on one of them. Prove yourself.
You can edit your OP within 15 minutes after posting, by the way.
You should ask specifically what the pre-requisites are for the AP classes in question. I agree “not ready” seems vague.
At our high school, if a student doesn’t take the “honors” version and pass with an A or B then they have to take a placement exam or some other qualifer to show they are ready to make the jump from regular to AP. Perhaps taking the “honors” version final and performing well would suffice. Maybe talking with the honors teacher and see if he/she would give you supplemental work to prepare you. For math, some kids I know take a summer community college class.
the unfair quarterly is basically a pop test. No preparations or anything. I scored 80s but still managed to keep my overall average above 90. Also my school doesn’t have any AP requirements. I admit my writing isn’t that great (I still manage to get 85+ on them) The reason this made me disappointed is because back in 9th grade teachers/guidance said keep doing what I am doing and I will get into AP classes and I took that advice and did better but it still didnt work out. I saw other kids that are not dumb but not as hardworking and academically well get into it so i dont understand why i didn’t get into it. I talked to my teacher about and hour ago. She said I still have two quarters and if I do well Ill get into it but considering everyone told me that in the beginning of the year and last year im not sure anymore
Keep advocating for yourself and touching base with the instructor.
I understand the “unfair” feelings about pop quizzes, but it’s not unfair if everyone is in the same boat. The unfairness arises when someone is sick on test day and gets to take the “pop” test another day. Or at our school, we have a block schedule where one period gets the “pop” test on Tuesday and another period gets the same test on Wednesdays.
My A student son just got a D on a pop quiz in math. He did the unit work but didn’t really master the material. It wasn’t enough to just get the homework done, he needed to spend a bit more time on the problem sets.
