I think Unofficial is just a bunch of ********

Anyone doesn't know, today is Unofficial, where people go drinkin all day.

Yea, it's so Unofficial that it actually is Official.

Basically both sides are morons. The faculty and administration are morons for tryin to stop it b/c people drink all the time and the students are morons b/c they make the t-shirts and wear green and do all this stupid bullcrap.

If you're gonna drink, fine, I got no problems with this, but damn, stop puttin yourself out there to be like rebellers. Just ****in drink and shut up.

It's annoyin as hell.

In reality, anyone can drink any part of the day they want, morning, afternoon, or at night, so what's so damn special about "UNOFFICIAL?"

IT'S LIKE YOUR NOT CONFORMING BUT YOU ARE CONFORMING.

I personally don't care if peeps drink or not, I don't find it offensive, but just the way they go about it is just one of those ****ed up things.

And if you need to find a holiday to drink in the morning, then I don't understand you.

uhm... why not

i'm just going to say i agree with the post, st. patricks day isn't for another two weeks you idiots

dude, are you drunk?

gotta agree

me three.... but it's ok i'm drunk too

Well I'm confused.

haha what a grinch.

i hope less lame people like the thread-starter show up this fall.. but unfortunately the boring people population is just gonna keep going up :(

fun. fun. fun. everybody but you is having. fun. fun. fun.

bears---do you honestly think it would be any different if it were on St. P's Day? Drunken revelers celebrate Unofficial because St. P's Day falls during UIUC spring break. Oh, and isn't it just a coincidence that the guy who started Unofficial owns 3 bars in Champaign? It's just another U of I tradition with a legion following...kinda like the Chief (but he's gone now, oh well). Really, the only truly $hitty-a$$ thing about Unofficial is for those of us who have to work in a food place on that day. Minimum wage is not worth putting up with belligerent drunk guys. As bad as my place was, I feel pity for Antonio's...that place looked like a dump last night.

taffy--oh, f#ck it...nevermind

yes, st. patrick's day does fall on spring break now, but i heard unofficial was originally a response to students being unable to get beligerant during Engineering Open House where i guess a bunch of parents and other interested people come check out the program and its work.

i'm not sure it would be such a big thing if it was just a celebration of st. patrick's day on march 17th. i think part of the attraction comes from the "unofficial" gimmick.

krbarrett77 - "i think part of the attraction comes from the "unofficial" gimmick."

no, a lot of the attraction comes from the idea of doing a power hour at 9AM and staying drunk all day with your friends. its genius.

Divinity - "Oh, and isn't it just a coincidence that the guy who started Unofficial owns 3 bars in Champaign?"

See, I opened this thread expecting something like the above. Just like how Christmas is used to market ridiculous spending, Unofficial is a bar holiday, giving the bars a reason to celebrate something. Its the same as things like bomb night or wine night. they have to think up new occasions to drink so that people arent like "why would I go to the bar on a wednesday?" or "why would I go to the bar at 10AM and stay there all day?"

We can save the discussion on why bars love to hire fraternity guys for later.

oh my god.....sigh... nevermind...not going to bother....ah to hell with it

whoever here thinks downing beer at 9 AM in the morning, that's just sick...
i barely have a stomach for breakfast when I wake up. the idea of staying drunk the entire day and drinking for the whole day just does not make sense to me. if people started drinking at like 2:00 or 3 in the afternoon or so that would make more sense but seriously the thought of drinking green colored beer at 9 AM right when you wake up, honey you're a borderline alcoholic.
yes there are people who simply do it just to rebel against the school and i think that's just plain childish. don't people drink enough on the weekends? just because you are "deprived" of a special day to drink because of spring break does not mean you all of a sudden have a right to mark a whole friday as St. Patrick's day and drink all day. yes i will say the bar owner who made this up was quite a genius, a sick money hungry genius who may have indrectly caused the death of that UI alum., but ugh the bars make enough money as is. also it was reported that by noon, 248 people had already recieved drinking tickets...I don't think that would make this "holiday" worth it one bit when you need to pay (varying) about $200 or so.
but on a sidenote this year's unofficial actually wasn't that bad. not as hyped up as it was people thought it was going to be. barely any people coming to class drunk or throwing up in the quad or sidewalk, quite a few people sitting down though just in front of houses on the sidewalk. it was good that the admin. decided to add a few threats here and there to curb the wildness a little.

"the thought of drinking green colored beer at 9 AM right when you wake up, honey you're a borderline alcoholic."

HAHA.. i don't see how alcoholism has anything to do with drinking with people on Unofficial at 9am... i just looked up the "10 warning signs of alcoholism" and drinking in the morning on unofficial didn't really fall into any of them. i think you are just trying to classify things you don't do as abnormal so you don't feel like a loser.

"does not mean you all of a sudden have a right to mark a whole (as opposed to a half?) friday as (Unofficial) St. Patrick's day"

you're on a streak, freedom of assembly isn't a right, its alcoholism. also, who says you have to recognize it as a holiday? i can call tomorrow unofficial whatever day and its your right to RECOGNIZE it as a holiday or not. In the case of unofficial, many students choose to recognize it, so don't complain about them if you reserve the right to choose not to.

"I don't think that would make this "holiday" worth it one bit when you need to pay (varying) about $200 or so"

I don't think many of the people that went out and got drinking tickets would stand on your side.

As for not many people going to class drunk, that might be because the school sent out that email saying if you go to class drunk you will get expelled... easy solution: don't go to class.

this is starting to seem like high school again, with the students being enemies of the administration... goodbye chief, goodbye unofficial?

oh taffy, at first i kind of respected you for giving decent posts in the past but now....ugh

"HAHA.. i don't see how alcoholism has anything to do with drinking with people on Unofficial at 9am... i just looked up the "10 warning signs of alcoholism" and drinking in the morning on unofficial didn't really fall into any of them. i think you are just trying to classify things you don't do as abnormal so you don't feel like a loser."

uh did i say drinking is abnormal?? no..I drink. but are you saying that you drink at 9AM every day? if you do then yes I WOULD call that abnormal. ESPECIALLY if you actually can't stand to drink the beer so early and have to force yourself to drink it to look cool.

there's a reason why UIUC is nationally ranked as a top school and that's because this is a school where most of the students are very intelligent and very rational. I can't stand people who think drinking is all they're here for and there are quite a few people here who are basically here just for that. we're UIUC not NIU

"I don't think many of the people that went out and got drinking tickets would stand on your side."
hey if you're willing to blow off $200 i have no problem with that, except for the people who keep in *****ing about how they're broke all the time

overall let's just drop this topic

haha, see, when I first came to this place, I thought there would be a bunch of intelligent people who liked to learn, enjoyed classes, are intelligent/rational people, etc...

yeah, I quickly lost that belief the first week of class. I'm NOT saying there are no people like that around here....but there's enough immature yay-look-at-me-there's-no-parents-here high school mentality to drive one to exasperation. so, I officially declare myself an uptight stick-in-the-mud because I just don't understand drinking just to get **** drunk.

IMO, what prevent UIUC' from becoming even a greater school than it is now, are the simple minded and hypocritical people on this campus who cant help but pretend that they are independent, thoughtful and know stuff, like the two retarded drunk girls I saw on Friday in the quad who yelled at people "dont go to class, dont' give in to the system..." What is Unofficial? It's simply a day for many people, as described above, to falsely fall into the comforting thought that they actually matter in this school for one day, by showing off their lack of brains.

"uh did i say drinking is abnormal?? no..I drink. but are you saying that you drink at 9AM every day? if you do then yes I WOULD call that abnormal. ESPECIALLY if you actually can't stand to drink the beer so early and have to force yourself to drink it to look cool."

9AM every day? now you're twisting the subject... we're talking about once a year students drinking in the morning, oh no call student patrol.

"there's a reason why UIUC is nationally ranked as a top school and that's because this is a school where most of the students are very intelligent and very rational. I can't stand people who think drinking is all they're here for and there are quite a few people here who are basically here just for that."

I think a major thing this school has going for it is that it has a good academic reputation and social reputation. Why go to U of I for engineering instead of Cal Tech? Because this is the U of I, and I really don't want it getting turned into Cal Tech.

"what prevent UIUC' from becoming even a greater school than it is now, are the simple minded and hypocritical people on this campus who cant help but pretend that they are independent, thoughtful and know stuff,"

I hate the hypocritical people that say the above, all the time.

"there's a reason why UIUC is nationally ranked as a top school and that's because this is a school where most of the students are very intelligent and very rational. I can't stand people who think drinking is all they're here for and there are quite a few people here who are basically here just for that. we're UIUC not NIU"

Just don't tell that to the students who attend NIU. They'll be b*tching till Judgment Day.
