i want to be a communications major, but they do not have it

hi. i want to be a communications major, but columbia does not have it. my future dream job is to be a television reporter. is there any way to become this while still attending columbia in the event that i am accepted?

suejinxp: I'm not sure how you'd major in something where no classes are offered. Your best bet is probably to take a related major for undergrad(maybe English?), and take some classes(I believe you're allowed up to 4 graduate classes) in the business school in marketing, or something closer to what you want to do. That said, I do not attend nor work for Columbia, so I may be missing a very similar major.

My best advice to you is to go to an information session and ask the person giving the information session. They're pretty knowledgeable about what's possible in terms of majors.

Check to see if your major is offered under a different name, or field.

NYU as an example has a program that is called Media Culture and Communications , which used to be called Communications Studies, BS - same program just a different name and maybe added focus.

Just an example.

You can major in anything and be a tv reporter. Work on the college newspaper, for the campus tv station, apply for internships.

Communications is more of a marketing/pr degree. Columbia has few undergrad majors that are preprofessional. It does have a great journalism school, but I suspect those classes are not open to undergrads.

I suspect Columbia might have Journalism majors...but as stated above, it doesn't matter if you are involved in the school paper, radio station, etc.

On the other hand, if you are really sure, than apply to Syracuse University or Northwestern University which are among the tops for what you are looking for.

The University of Southern California has that major if you're interested.

Communications is a football player's major. You can major in anything and be a tv reporter. It's all about getting internships and breaking your way into the business.

It's not as if you need to know anything other than to read the TPTer to be a tv reporter.

If that's the major you want, just go for it.
