I'm a high school junior in the process of looking at colleges I want to apply to, and I want to major in film production. What I've noticed is that it appears that most kids going into film production majors are aspiring film directors. My ultimate career goal is to be a production designer/art director for films. I understand that such positions are worked up to through set design, makeup design, costume design, etc; these are the things I'm interested in doing throughout my career. I don't exactly know what major to seek out if I'm interested in the artistic production aspect of films, but not directing films.

If anyone has any advice on this it would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you!

IMNSHO, I think the best course would be a major in film production, ESPECIALLY one in which you start making films from the first year (Media Arts at Ohio University comes to mind). There are so many roles to be filled in a film, and if you work on lots of films (both yours and others), you can see what job you like best (producing, casting, art direction, etc) and start specializing in that role. Work on as many films as you can (everyone is always looking for people to work on their films). A major in film production is not just for aspiring directors. This is where you get experience and develop your true passion.

I’m only familiar with the NYU film program which requires students to take a range of courses in all the different aspects of film, from scriptwriting and sound to film history and production, etc. Once you have the basics you can specialize in whatever area you feel is your “calling” whether that’s cinematography or editing or being a producer or art director, etc. NYU even has a minor called “Business of Entertainment, Media & Technology” which combines business courses at their Stern School of Business with Tisch film courses in producing various media. But I agree with the advice in the post above, if you’re interested in film production, you should try your hand an all the different jobs involved in making a film to see what works for you. Since you’re currently a high school junior, I would highly recommend taking a summer film course. There are lots of options available and you could try it out, before committing serious dollars to a film major. Another alternative would be to major in something else, say Business Marketing and minor in Film.

Or, Columbia College Chicago (Cinema Arts + Science). Start in your major immediately. Minor in media management, (Business & Entrepreneurship), perhaps.
