Hi, so I am having trouble deciding what to major in when I go to college. I will be a Senior in the fall, and I am already looking at some colleges. However, I do not know what I need to major in to become a movie producer. I know that I will not be able to go to film school because I do not have any “films” that I could submit when applying.
I was thinking about going the business route or the communications route. Or, I was also looking to see if there are schools that have a good film and business school, so maybe I can have some experience with both?
I am a pretty good student with a 4.48 weighted gpa, on the high honor roll every semester, and am very active in my community and school. Hopefully these attributes would help me while I am applying.
Overall, I just need some input on what direction I should be going into. Thanks!
There are lots of different ways to become a film producer…they major in pretty much anything (although film/media/communication studies and business are popular majors). It appears to me that most film producers who weren’t already famous movie stars, related to people in the film industry, and/or wealthy enough to randomly begin their own production company worked their way up - they got a college degree, started as production assistants or other low-level roles on movie or TV sets, and worked their way into higher positions over time. Some start as editors or writers and make the transition into film production later. Internships, of course, help a lot.
Check out Chapman University’s Creative Producing major!!! You work with the film school, but the major is focused on the producing side of filmmaking. You don’t need to do a film to apply, instead it is just another essay or two!
