this engineering vs. finance vs. consulting debate does not belong in this thread.

i also believe that the original poster’s questions have been largely answere:. in that cornell is probably a better school for the expressed needs, but that it should come down to fit in the end.

we can stop here, thanks.

nicely put tenebrousfire

just chose cornell over upenn. message me.

wow this is an active thread. from the posts i’ve read, it looks like cornell would be a better choice especially if you want to get into the sciences.

What a weird thread. I am very glad that last year when my son was deciding between Penn and Cornell [and others] for engineering, I did not see the nasty behavior of [some] Cornell folks. Last year it was a nice, congenial debate back and forth, and I found both the Penn and Cornell folks to be quite funny and friendly on both boards. If I were reading this now, I don’t think we would have wanted to take a second look at Cornell, actually. What has happened? This is too weird. And if someone’s high school has a better lab than the ones I saw at Penn, than wow, maybe a fifth year at high school might not be so bad!
Penn, for us, because Old Ben called us. Cornell is just grand, too, in fact we have multiple family alum from Cornell, but it is not for everyone. [particularly the weather!] My son also would have been 4th generation MIT, had he wanted to apply there, but a campus information and tour changed his mind on even applying.

Again, best of luck to all with your decisions. Visit, talk to people, get a feel for yourself. Hopefully you’ll be happy with your decisions.

As I recall, the Penn board didn’t have a Cornell ■■■■■ infestation last year…that might explain the difference you’ve noticed.

^^But the Cornell board has always had Penn ■■■■■ infestation…

In defense of Cornell, I have to say that MuerteaPablo started the whole Cornell V Penn war. A few years ago, she transfered from Penn to Cornell and stalked the Cornell boards making ludicrous claims/insults about how future Cornell grads would look forward to jobs at McDonalds yet Penn students could find real jobs on Wall Street. After numerous insults by MP pretty much everyone on the Cornell board was angry. The only reason I came on the Penn boards was to spite MP, rub her face in the mud a little with the whole admission rate rising this year, and just give her a taste of her own medicine. I am incredibly sick of the whole Penn>>>>Cornell in everything because they are ranked a few spots higher on USNWR ranks; if one is admitted to both schools in any area besides finance (IE wharton), or engineering (Cornell) that one should chose based on fit because the schools are pretty dang similar academically.

I’m positive that if you asked science faculty at any university, they’d tell you that Cornell has a huge name in the science and engineering community and is definitely higher than other ivies. At this point, Cornell is competing with schools like Caltech and MIT because it has poured so much money into facilities and the top faculty.

Yeah, it’s basically all my fault. I’m serious.

^^Glad to know you understand.

let’s also not forget that meurtopablo was rejected from Columbia, and he/she takes shots at them on occasion as well.

mp must be so cool in real life, i wanna meet you

i reiterate my earlier point: this discussion is over and you are not helping.

though i want to meet muerte too before i get out of here!

But how can you insult Penn for its selectivity when Cornell’s admission rate is so much higher? I’m sorry, I just don’t understand that at all…

1.89% difference between Penn and Cornell…

…not statistically significant.

Who cares about acceptance rate??? Juliard is like 6% are you saying that its better than Harvard?

All of you should just go play in traffic.

Then, if you’re still able to, go jack off to some US News rankings while you repudiate how you’ll actually FIT into the college you’ve chosen. The question jemoppenheim first posed was not asking “what defines Cornell/Penn so I can make an informed decision that I won’t not regret in a year once I actually get to the school I choose,” it was worded in a way to ask “Even though Cornell has more prestige in engineering, I think Penn is more prestigious in general. Which prestige matters more? I don’t actually care about the programs, but I want people to envy me.” It’ll be more helpful to your decision making process to ask the first question, in my opinion.

Hey OP, if your still listening, are you thinking about going to grad school. If you are, it doesn’t really matter where you go for undergrad. Choose the one that seems most fun, and the one you think you’ll get around best in. I want to try a city, and I’m contemplating double majoring in some whaton thing or economics, so I chose Penn. When the two schools are so similar, it doesn’t really make a difference.

Especially if you go to grad school. If not, it might help a bit for Cornell if you’re going pure engineering. Otherwise, I would go with whichever one you feel you could enjoy the most.

I have no stake in this thread whatsoever but ■■■■■■■■ through I see people saying Wharton has fallen due to financial collapse. This is exactly the time to go into finance actually. All of you with herd mentality don’t realize it but when there is lots of competition going out of business and demand for investments remaining inelastic, there is money to be made. Oh well, maybe as a Wharton graduate I’ll recruit an engineer from Cornell to manage my hedge fund’s database.

Science or engineering major = Cornell as the easy choice
The Goldwater scholarships is the most prestigious undergraduate science award there is (everyone on this board knows this)

look at this rankings of Goldwater scholars Upenn has 0 this year and Cornell is on the top of this list with 4 above Harvard,Princeton, and Yale.
