I am currently planning on attending Missouri State University in Springfield, MO, unless I get into (and can afford) a West or East Coast college.

I am really intrigued by finance. I think that taking courses such as Investments I or Financial Analysis would be fascinating.

The problem is that there are so many business admissions requirements that I will have to take 21 hours each semester to fit it all in. I also plan on majoring in Global Studies with an emphasis in business/economics.

If I minored in finance, would I still have to complete the business requirements, such as Information Systems in Business or Operations Management?

I hope to become a journalist, but just in case I can't find a job, I want something to fall back on, as I think banking would be fun.

If you intend to become a journalist, you should do a journalism or a liberal arts major. So you know, banking is not a fall back plan for pretty much anyone. You need to have great reasoning abilities and the willingness to work way more hours than you sleep!

Maybe Journalism with the possibility of Economics double major or minor through the College of Arts and Sciences/Liberal Arts College (whatever Missouri State has). Economics might satisfy your curiosity, in some upper-division classes, with learning how markets work in a financial, monetary, or banking sense. Some upper-div Econ courses go into stocks and bonds (and investments) too.

If I can, I would like to double major in Global Studies with an emphasis in business and economics and journalism while minoring in finance… I don’t even know if this is possible.

“Global Studies” is quickly becoming a major that everyone loves to pursue, but most businesses have little use for (compared to accountants, engineers, financial analysts, health-care workers, technology workers, salespeople).

I suppose it’s technically possible. I just read an article today spotlighting 27 UC Berkeley undergrads who are triple majors. They need to take 20+ units every semester, and they all need to be really proactive and organized, but not neccessarily intellectually superior than their peers.

If you plan to triple major in Global Studies, Econ, and Journalism, then expect to have almost no social life.

Do(es) your school(s) offer Global Studies with an emphasis in business and economics, or is it just Global Studies with no concentrations? If there is a dedicated concentration in business and economics for the Global Studies major, then it should also be doable to minor in Journalism.

turtlerock: The Global Studies major at Missouri State does have an emphasis in business/economics. It also has a concentration in Middle Eastern Studies, so I suppose that would work.

I looked at the minor in Journalism, but it has courses in both print/Internet and Broadcast Journalism. I wanted to do only Broadcast.

What if I majored in economics and double minored in finance and Middle Eastern Studies? Then, I could go to grad school for journalism.
