i want to make sur i get into ucla

okay pepes my GPA is a 3.5 im a freshman i have no ap classes yet but i will have two next year i did 5 hours of community service and was rewarded by the national health department i was in the junior cadet class i love reading political science books and love tennis do i have a chance from now oh yeah i was ranked 176 out of 1376 freshman's also African American

I don’t know if there is an assured way to get into UCLA. I think it’s a reach for all Calif kids.

But, do your best…keep your UC GPA high. Take the best curriculum you can.

I think it will help if you get your ranking up. Right now, you aren’t top 10%. It would even be better if you could be in the top 4%…but still no guarantee for UCLA.

thanks but do you think im on a good track and what do you mean im in the 10 percent i thought getting this ranking was excellent i bet out 3/4 of school

Selective colleges like UCLA often want you to “bet out” 9/10 of your school, if not 99/100.

you can read about the selection process at [Freshman Admission Process - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/Prospect/Adm_fr.htm) If you are going to school in CA, you should be meeting with your counselor to make sure you’re taking the appropriate classes. And since the UC schools want to be available to those facing disadvantages, if that applies to you then be SURE you participate in the programs for which UC schools give extra credit in admissions such as enrichment programs.

Check your math: 176 out of 1376 is not the top 10 percent.

jadagirl, the typical accepted applicant to UCLA looks something like this:

3.85 unweighted gpa
4.2 weighted gpa (relevant only to schools with lots of AP and HOnors available)
1900-2200 on the 3part SAT
1350-1500 on the 2 required SATIIs
5-7 AP classes (IF AP is offered in abundance at your school, if not, disregard)

As you can see, the GPA hurdle is tougher than the SAT hurdle. The UCs and most public flaships put much more emphasis on in-school performance than “potential” performance as measured by standardized tests. The good news is that the GPA does not count Freshman year, only Sophomore and Junior, and the three summers around those two years, assuming you take summer school at your high school or a junior college.

Try getting a 2400 on the SAT. That seems to work.

thanks you guys

Aim for a 3.8 gpa 2100 sat

Just realized your first post is a single sentence. First tip: work on writing. You’re going to need it for the essays if your gpa and ranking aren’t high enough.

Hey jadagirl, ima tell you a little secret. Just because you seem cool. ahah jk

Dont take many APs. Take the regular english courses and history courses. None of that APUSH crap. I graduated from high school 2 years ago and found that the UCs dont care as long as yours GPA is high. 2-3 AP classes is enough.

This looks much better:
3.9uw
4.0w
2 AP courses

than this:
3.6uw
3.9w
8 AP courses

Dont be tempted to take the AP classes just to look smart, because when I graduated, people who took the stupidest classes but had high gpas got in. Dont take pointless GPA-killing APs like i did.

thank you great advice

I’m not even sure if that can happen. Are you adding the extra GPA point in you get for an AP? With 3.6 uw, you should have higher than 3.9w. Or with 3.9w, you should have lower than 3.6uw.

haha sentiment, I dont know what youre trying to get at. But it all depends on what you actually get in the AP classes. Yeah if you got all As, then you would have higher than a 3.9w. If you got all Cs, youd get much lower. I was just giving one theoretical example.
