I want to work as a Petroleum Engineer

Without getting the petroleum engineering degree. I want to work upstream, like being on the rigs/managing. However, as I see it, the petroleum engineering degree is specialized, in a way that I can probably only get employment as a petroleum engineer.

My main thought is that: Would a mechanical engineering degree land me the same spots as a petroleum engineering degree?

I ask this because a mechanical engineering degree is not as specialized as p.e., so it would have me open to more areas incase of anything.

Thanks.

I recently met with a professor. He is on his way now to Oklahoma State to take over the petroleum engineering program. And he said exactly what you said. It is a very specialized major with a very steep demand curve. What he recommended was Chemical engineering. He has sent many students upstream after even a BS in chemical engineering. He also recommended if your school offers it a minor in petroleum just for an edge in the work force.
