efeens – when you start your job at the grocery store, keep in mind:
Grocery stores operate at very low margins. Whatever you can do to reduce costs or increase sales will make you an extremely valuable employee (and thus one who will get a glowing review/job offer next year/outstanding recommendation letter)
Learn your job thoroughly, then try and understand every single job in the store – the cashier, the stock clerk, the produce buyer. See if you can shadow the people who negotiate with vendors. Every time you can see how experts get a better price will be to your benefit.
Never consider any job beneath you – if it’s mopping up a spill in aisle 5, you’re showing the customers you care about having a clean, safe store – these things count. People have many many options in selecting which store to go to – you are making a difference and making your store stand out. You are selling a commodity (fresh food) – and a big part of the consumer’s willingness to spend their hard-earned dollars in your store comes down to trust and confidence.

The skills you accumulate in this job are all transferable. Good luck.
