I was offered a sub letter, my roommates want some of the money from the sublet.

I live in a house with 5 other friends two of whom are moving out and being replaced by new roommates. One of the new roommates is offering to pay rent if he can move in early and I’m taking a month off to travel. It makes sense for him to sublet my room for the month. I was planning on switching rooms anyway and can move stuff out for the month. Anyway two of my roommates believe that since he’s moving in early we should treat it as though we now have seven roommates rather than him paying for my rent while he stays in my room. I think this is pretty ridiculous but I’m afraid I’m being swayed by the fact that there’s $600 on the line. Am I wrong or being unreasonable?

If he cannot move into HIS room before his lease starts, and the only room available is YOUR room, which you will temporarily allow him to stay in until his lease starts, then you are subletting your room and you get the money. The roommates should not share the income is the roommates are occupying their rooms. If a lot of rooms are vacant, then you should share the rent he pays for that early month.

Nope, he is subletting your room for a month and you get to keep it.

Are all the others going to be there for the month that you are gone? Six people in the house splitting things 6 ways (you are gone), just like how it;s been all year. You don’t ‘keep’ the money but you don’t have to pay because you aren’t there.

If several other aren’t going to be there for that month either, then I can see where you shouldn’t get all the benefit of not being there (several empty rooms?). If he’s subleasing from someone else who is moving out and that person isn’t going to be there, then I think he/she should benefit from finding the sublease.

Yeah one of my roommates is leaving a week later for 3 weeks and claims that it’s unfair but at the same time this guy wants to move in exactly when I’m leaving soo it seems like it’s really not his problem.

One other roommate will be gone for 3 weeks which is not the dates that the sub letter wants to be there. The guy who found the sub letter will be there and has asked for no compensation I offered to thrown some money his way for helping to find the guy who would take my room.
