Hello, I was expelled last year and are now looking to apply to nursing school. My grades are great (3.8) cumulative and almost a 4.0 in my sciences with 100+ hours volunteering at hospitals. I was in a university nursing program and averaged a 3.75 for 3 semesters before I was expelled. The expulsion was because I was involved in a fight (which I did not start, nor was I the one initially attacked. I had jumped in to prevent injury to my friend) and the school convicted me of assault.
I was wondering if anyone had experience applying to nursing school or any school with a previous expulsion?
What are my options for getting into a new school, or if my previous expulsion will be an automatic rejection to the schools I am looking for
I think you’re going to have difficulty finding a nursing program that will accept you. Healthcare professions are extremely reluctant to accept people who have a record of acts of violence against another individual.
Your story sounds like there may have been mitigating circumstances. Is there anyone acting in an official capacity at your school who would be willing to write a letter of support and explanation for you? By official capacity, I mean a Dean of Students or Chair of the Disciplinary Committee or something similar.
A explosion for assault may also make it difficult for you to get a state nursing license. It’s certainly something you will need to report to the licensing board in every state where you apply for license.
My son was in a nursing program and also expelled. Things are very different now, and frankly unfair in my opinion. It’s all about risk management rather than burden of proof. He had a very frank and honest discussion with admissions at another school. They are very supportive. He showed them the final report from the college which laid out the case and evidence. He also had good grades and they said they would not hesitate to accept him. Hopefully school will resume on campus in the Fall. I noticed you said the school convicted you, no court of law correct?

Were you convicted of assault in a court of law ?
Did you speak with the university’s ombudsman??? You may need legal counsel.
