I Was Rejected and This Is How I Feel

Hey there, i was exactly in your position 2 years ago. UMD was a reach, and I felt confident. Unfortunately I got rejected as well. A few days before decision day, I also went through a bad break up with my gf of 2 years. It was one of the worst periods of my life. I loved UMD and wanted to go there as bad as you, I understand 100%.

I kept my head up and realized that this isn’t the end. Heck it’s far from it. In a way it motivated me even more. Im also gonna say this, I applied again for transfer after completing 30 credits at college. I got rejected AGAIN. I felt horrible after that as well because I felt that I wasted so much time with hopes into successfully transferring into CP. I was a middle of the pack applicant, not exceptional but not horrible. I felt my hard work had gone to waste.

With that said, believe me you’re not the first or last person to go through what you feel. I was in your shoes during senior year. One of my friends had to apply 3 times before they got into UMD, so trust me you are not the only one. I highly recommend trying to transfer in. Whether you wanna go about that through CC or a 4-year school is your choice. But believe me, I feel everything you’re saying and this isn’t the end. You have lots of time to still get into UMD.

Finally, good luck with everything. I was in your shoes, and although it sucks getting rejected initially, keep UMD as a goal and strive towards it one day at a time. Stay motivated, stay sharp. Biggest thing for transfer is just having a good GPA, it’s easier than HS applicants.

Research transferring into UMD, lots of people do!

@DavidHopkins Thank you so much for your kind words. Monday was hard, harder than I thought it was going to be, but at the same time, it motivated me even more.

@tap236 Thank you, your story was helpful to read, I have considered transferring. It is a good idea but there is also a part of me that feels like I need to move on from home. I have a lot to consider with transferring.

@lycoris Couple decades I was accepted to UMDCP as a transfer student but could not attend due to I had a daytime job to support myself. So I settled into UMUC, UMDCP’s sister school which offered night classes. After initial disappointment, I could not have been happier in UMUC, which had tons of great professors (I know that because I later went on to a graduate program within a really top university, and compared the professors there with those I had in my undergraduate). I got my professional license at first try right out of my undergraduate and have had a good career so far.
With the right attitude, you will be successful no matter which college you attends.

@amNotarobot Thank you so much for the insight, with the right mindset anything is possible. Glad that you loved your undergrad professors and had a fulfilling experience.

@lycoris , you have such a wonderful attitude and are wise beyond your years.

Did you apply to UMBC? It is easier to get in but it seems like a great school too.

@Astro77 Thank you so much, I did not apply to UMBC unfortunately, they don’t have what I wanted to do.

Hi, I’m late to this. Go to Towson for a year, get a 3.5+ and come to UMD next year. Fall down 7 times and stand up 8!

@bbe267 I was seriously considering that option! Do you have experience with that?

I don’t know anyone who transferred from Towson to umd but i know several people including family who went to Towson and loved it! They are all successes in their careers.

Thank you so much for posting this. Its always so easy for people to share their acceptances, but it takes so much more to share a failure. The way you have taken this news is admirable, and I wish you the best, at whatever college you end up at.

I just saw your reply today. I am sooo late but thank you so much for your advice and for understanding my situation. How are you doing now? Have you figured out what you want to do in the future? Because I really haven’t, haha.

@BurningSmirk Sorry for the late response, I will be attending Montgomery College with a plan to transfer in one year. Still pursuing Public Health and Pre-Med. I did make an appeal to UMD but was rejected a second time, unfortunately, but I gave it my best shot and I ultimately found the closure I was looking for.

@athenasgal Thank you so much for the support!

Hi everyone! Not sure if anyone will see or read this but this is for anyone who’s struggling with their admissions decision. There is hope, I was accepted a few days ago and will be starting at UMD in Fall 2019! It was a difficult road but I did it, and I want to put it out there, if you have a dream and the will to back it up, you can achieve anything.

As a senior in HS I was rejected by UMD, I then filed an appeals, fought my case, and was rejected again. I chose to not settle and I went to Montgomery College because I still believed that UMD was the right place for me. I worked like no other while I was at Montgomery College, I had an internship, did community service, got an on campus job, worked leadership roles, and made strides to personally connect with each of my professors. The college experience is all what you make it. Yes, there were days where I was so frustrated and upset with my situation, but there were always days to make up for it. I made great friends at Montgomery College, the professors care deeply about the students, and my peers were incredibly humble and dedicated. It’s not about where you are or what your circumstances may be, it’s about who YOU are.

I did what everyone called farfetched, people told me to settle. I chose to say NO. I’m proud to say that I will be transferring out of Montgomery College a year early with close to 60 credits completed and starting Fall 2019 at UMD, where I will be double majoring in Public Health Science with Government and Politics. I am currently set to graduate a year early and I couldn’t be more excited to begin this new chapter of my life.

I’ll be honest, getting accepted to UMD really hasn’t sunk in yet, and it probably won’t until I’m sitting in my dorm alone for the first time. But in the end, my advice is to believe. Believe like no other, believe in your dreams and let grit be the backbone of all you do. Stay focused and don’t let anyone call you crazy for wanting more.

If anyone does stumble on this, feel free to comment and reach out. I am more than happy to give advice and words of encouragement!

Thanks for reading, and good luck.

@lycoris Congrats on getting accepted to UMD! Thanks for sharing your journey .You set goals for yourself and then achieved them with a positive and mature outlook!

@lycoris - Congratulations on your success!! It should serve as an inspiration to others. I know that you’ll do well at UMD

YAY! Congrats and Welcome to Terp Nation!

As others have said Towson is a great school and one of my daughter’s friends went there even after being admitted to UMD. However, if it does not have your major, you have two options, either transfer after a year to a school that does or get your undergraduate in a related subject and get an MPH.

@lycoris Best of luck to you in college. After all, Life is a game and how you play is how you determine your success.
