Beware of the one post poster.

I can complete understand how you feel. There are SO many people in your position right now, it’s heart breaking. Working hard all those years with an expectation that it will all payoff in the end. I understand your anger. I guess all I can say is this, working hard all of those years and the lessons you learned by doing that will take you further in life than the name of the college that you attended. We put so much emphasis on “brand” in this county, when it’s really about what you make out of the opportunities given to you. You will be less upset as time goes on, just keep in mind that admissions have been CRAZy this year and the trend is only going to get worse, I worry about nexts years class, can’t imagine!
Try to keep a positive attitude, don’t fall for the whole “white middle class thing”, it’s not a good excuse to perpetuate. Blame it on the amount of really qualified kids out there applying to tons of schools, and the fact that we have this “thing” about what we consider to be a “good” or “bad” school. You can get a great education and have a great college experience just about anywhere, it’s your attitude about it that matters.

■■■■■ means fraud, folks, and c33 obviously is one.

With a 1430 M+CR and a good GPA, I am shocked that Bing rejected you and Fordham waitlisted you. At some schools, you’d have been given merit scholarships.

The problem now is that even if Fordham pulls you off the WL, if you need aid, you probably won’t get much…and they may be “need aware” for their WL.

What is your situation? Can you afford to go any school you want? If so, there are schools that will still accept you (and maybe even give you a scholarship).

If money is an issue, than Suny Stony is your best bet.

Did that 90/100 GPA include some low grades in academic subjects? GPA isn’t just about the raw number.

lol i dont want to sound like a d***, but i dont get how some of my friends got in if you didnt.

one had 1700 SAT(710 M, 400 CR, 590 W) the other 1600 (660 M, 440 CR, 500 W)
both have like 0 EC’s. both had GPA’s of about 3.0UW/3.3W and no AP’s/ 4-6 honors.
both are international students and got no FA though. maybe thats why?

What exactly is a “■■■■■?” What, you think I’m joking or something?

Gromit- Thanks for your reassurance. I apologize for my obnoxious/arrogant post. I was just really upset last night when I posted. You’re right, if I had to do high school over again, I would still work just as hard. I’m proud of my high school record regardless of what colleges apparently think of it.

Again, I feel like a jerk for my rude post… I realize there are millions of kids around the world you didn’t get into the schools they were hoping for.

^
Give it up, Catherine.

I’d say your safeties are pretty good. And grades matter much more than the college if you plan on going to grad school anyway.

“which gives me the best shot at a top business school if I do well?”

The top MBA programs want you to have at least two full years of increasingly responsible work experience as a bare minimum. They prefer more than that - say five or so. They expect excellent GMAT, undergraduate GPA, and letters of recommendation from your old college professors and your recent work supervisors. They care barely at all for the name on your college/university diploma.

Don’t worry about the places you didn’t get into. Take a long hard look at the places you have been admitted, and choose the one that you believe will work best for you. You applied to them, so there must have been something that you liked about them. Try to remember what that was.

Lulu- ***. You still think I’m a “■■■■■.” Look, I’m sorry to come across as so arrogant, but I’m not lying about my stats in the slightest! In fact, if I elaborated more, my record would sound even better. I honestly can NOT think of a reason why I wasn’t accepted to any schools other than my safeties. Just whatever.

The only place you should be surprised if you don’t get in, is a true safety. Everywhere else on your list there is some chance (no matter how small that chance may seem to you when you make your list) of rejection.

Catherine33-
You don’t know the proper name of an award you “won”. You don’t have the minimum credentials to win another you “won”. You’re a 12 season varsity athlete who somehow still has the time to be in multiple school music groups, edit multiple publications, lead clubs and service groups and do 6 different internships with such depth that lead researchers put your name on their publications. And yeah, you don’t know what a “■■■■■” is. LOL.

Catherine, start your own thread. You are hijacking the OP’s which is not right.

OP, congratulations on getting into the schools you did. It has been a terrible years for admissions. You did get turned down/WL at some match schools which is ALWAYS a possibility . A post mortem is really not useful. Suffice to say that you had some bad luck in terms of the statistical odds, a rough admissions year that made the odds worse than they usually are.

Binghamton is never a safety. My son with 2300+ SATs was deferred from there and my son who got in just about everywhere last year was also WLed there. Being female does not help at some of your schools and applying for financial aid is also an issue at some of them Combined with a GPA that is below average the way the grades are pumped up these days made it a tough go for you.

My son’s prep school “sent” a number of fine students to all of the schools that accepted you. Baruch is no safety either and I’ve seen kids surprised at denial from there and other CUNY honor programs that they regarded as safeties. They are competitive programs and are becoming more so as more families are looking hard at college costs. Again, going back to my son’s school, a lot of the kids there, more than the historical data shows, have been applying to the NY state schools, SUNYs and CUNYs and going to them. They are an excellent deal and money is very tight these days. You have some excellent choices and you should be proud of those acceptances.

Lulu- What are you talking about? What do you mean I don’t know the name of an award I won? Congressional Gold Award (and silver and bronze), Girl Scout Gold (and silver award), 3 Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, Mayor’s Award for Community Service… Art and Writing Gold Key Regional Awards through the National Alliance for Young Artists and Writers (and a Silver National Medal)…

And I make time for everything by barely sleeping. I’ve probably averaged 5 hours a night over my high school years.

Look, I’m sorry for hijacking this thread. I shouldn’t have posted anything to begin with… it was an impulsive post so SORRY. I just can’t stomach being called a liar. Do you think colleges thought I was lying, and that’s why they rejected me? I really do work so hard! I can not remember the last time I actually had a legitimate break.

If a student is on a wait list, s/he should make the effort to contact the school directly and appeal. In the case of GW (where my son is wait listed), they have asked for you to fill out a form, add a personal statement if you wish, and call them in late April on the days they state. (read the email letter and snail mail letter which showed up a couple of days ago). I believe they said something about FA still being available even if you are accepted late. The point is, lament less here on CC and deal with this now while there is time. If it’s Fordham, same thing; call them. Fordham has an aggressive recruiting campaign now and consequently has become way more selective every year. Nevertheless, not all their admits will accept and so, call! Fordham is a Jesuit university and like all the Jesuits, has a very personal touch to admissions. Good luck!

I’ve been around along time-- maybe I’m naive but why would Catherine’s post be a ■■■■■? What would the purpose of her post be?

I once posted under a different name (didn’t want to identified)- & was accused of being a ■■■■■- but it my post was genuine. I don’t get it…

Anyway-- OP so sorry about your disappointment. Many of the schools you applied to were schools with really reasonable tuitions-- I think your competetion has increased 200% with the bad economy. Go to one your accpetances or comm college - get great grades, save $ & plan on transferring into one of the others

Why does anyone ■■■■■? To see how many people will fall for the implausible story and waste time with it. C33’s story is actually quite similar to one I saw earlier, supposedly from Asian parents worried about their son’s chances. The 2390 SAT had them a little concerned, though he was an Eagle Scout etc. etc. etc. That one added the humorous fact that he’d been arrested for music piracy.

Lets take a look at Catherine’s achievements.

So apparently catherine put in at least 750 volunteer hours (to win a Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award, young adults need at lest 250 hours of volunteer service time and catherine apparently won 3 of them), headed many different clubs including several publications, went through 5 research internships, coauthored 3 publications, when it takes a LOT of time and effort to even do 1, and traveled to a foreign country for an internship.

Do you really think she isn’t a ■■■■■?

Okay listen, arguing over whether or not I’m a “■■■■■” is a waste of my time and yours.

I’m not lying about any of my achievements. Yeah, I have accomplished a lot… that’s why I’m so frustrated that I didn’t get into my top schools! My point exactly!

My research internships were completed over summers, and one of them was during this past winter when i ‘went abroad’ to a foreign country. The internship I did this past winter resulted in two separate publications. The other publication resulted from an internship I did at a veterinary pathology laboratory one summer ago.

And yeah, I realize I’ve done a lot of community service… The hours rack up fast for me. I organize red cross blood drives, volunteer at a retirement center in evenings, organize/lead boy scout merit badge workshops for my brother’s boy scout troop… 250 hours/year for the gold award isn’t really all that much. That’s less than an hour a day. And during my scattered free weeks over the summer, I spend a lot of time doing community service.

I didn’t even mention that I’ve done two independent studies through my school in journalism and videography… or that I’ve written and illustrated a children’s story with a political theme that I got published on several political blogs online… Or that my teacher recommendations were really great (I know because the teachers gave me a copy to see for myself).

And also, I hope you’re not suggesting that I’m upset about my 2390 SAT (that’s score choice total, btw. I took it twice, and 2390 is my highest combined score). I’m really proud of that score!
