I was selected for FAFSA verification....... but no taxes to file!!!

??? I don't know what I'm supposed to do! My mother is a single parent who does not work -- stays home to be a stay-at-home mom and only income is child support, which we DID report (to the dollar), but when she has gone to file taxes in the past, they tell her that child support is non-taxable so don't even bother. What are we supposed to provide if there are no tax or W-2 forms??? Like the child support checks?

Thanks so much!

EDIT: Oh also, it says that schools MAY request additional information... does that mean that some won't, and there's a chance that I won't even have to deal with this?

Don't panic. About 1/3 of FAFSAs are selected automatically for verification. If the school does ask you for verification just provide whatever you have (child support checks etc).

I think we were starred for verification last year but the school never actually asked for anything. Though we did have a special circumstances adjustment so we met with them to provide a bunch of documentation (about an inch thick) so that may be why we never did a separate verification.

One thing that you may have to consider is a college may want to see your fathers financial information. If a college is one that considers that non custodial parents income that is something that you will have to deal with. Some schools have a form specifically for that.
