yeah.. actually i think she's a shoe-in into NYU as well. and i do think that columbia deferred her because there's nothing "special" about her besides her high GPA and rank.

Um...NYU is a given.

My sister had stats slightly below your girlfriend's in terms of academics and slightly better in terms of EC's and she got into NYU with a 10G merit scholarship. She also got rejected from Columbia.

Yes, I would have to agree that she's quite likely to get into NYU. Of course it's not guaranteed, but she's obviously a very strong student and above-average for NYU admits. And also, deferral doesn't necessarily mean she won't still get into Columbia, just that the admissions committee wants to compare her to more of their RD applicants.

Perhaps the fact that she wants to be a doctor hurt her? Columbia does have a pretty big premed population, so she would have gone into a more competitive pool if she stated in her application that she intended to be a typical premed biology major.

And bah, the legacy system. I hate the legacy system, and I really wish Columbia would abolish it. It's nothing but a subtle form of socioeconomic and/or racial discrimination, and there's absolutely no need for it in this day and age.

your posts show your deep affection for your g/f, hy. :D

Did you try to tell her that there are excellent medical programs at schools like Harvard and Stanford and... ?

This just confirmed my equation that Good Academic Record + EC - Community service= Automatic Rejection/Defer/Waitlist. She has 0 hour of Community Service!

nyu is a joke to get into, plz...anyone with a 1250+ can get in, 1350+ scholarship money

The legacy system isn't to codify racial preferences....it's simply a means of encouraging alumni to give give give.

bball, I have to disagree about nyu...where do you get your information from? Browse those ED and RD decision threads on the nyu forum then come back here.

bball is just a tool in general... from his posts you can see how arrogant and how much other people dislike him

well i go to a school of the same caliber as nyu and like ur gf columbia was my first choice. but i do know many people who have gotten rejected to schools because of no community service. but on the other hand i know someone who had stats towards the lower percentile of admitted students to columbia, not becasue she had alot of ec's but because she had a few that she participated in for a long time 5+ years.

anyway i do think that she is goin to get in, but i wouldnt say its a shoe in. in fact i know someone who applied here and got rejected with much more ec's than i had and better scores. sometimes admissions can be fickle

I don't think she will have a problem getting into NYU
