I went to an open house today and here is some information I gathered

This is all general information so you may or may not know already.

-It is a BFA.
-For the audition, you need 2 songs (try not to be too contemporary), 2 monologues (age appropriate and no longer than 90 seconds), and you will be taught a dance combination.
Make sure the 2 songs and 2 monologues are contrasting.
-It is an intense production schedule.
-There will be some sort of Music theory type of test, but no worries, it’s just for placement!
-For the Unified auditions, you won’t have an accompanist. You have to bring the music recorded.
-The man giving us all this information told us that the program accepts around 20 students. So it is pretty competitive.
-If you are a male auditioning, you have a better chance because there are usually more females auditioning.

And for the freshman year, the recommended courses look something like this:

First semester: (17 credits)
-New Student Seminar
-College Writing
-Ballet 1
-Acting 1
-Music Theory 1
-Aural Skills 1
-Freshman Studio
-Vocal Technique for Musical Theatre

Second semester: (16.5 credits)
-College Writing II
-Ballet II
-Acting II
-Acting for Singer I
-Music Theory II
-Aural Skills
-Applied Voice
-Performance Practicum

This is probably all on the site.
You should check out montclair.edu/arts

:)

Is Montclair still primarily a commuter school? How about in the MT department: do most of the kids go home/leave campus on the weekends?

Lots of kids from South Jersey (the NJ suburbs of Philadelphia) attend Montclair and do not come home for the weekend.

My son knows mostly Montclair students who are theatre kids; it could be that students with other majors go home more.
