Montclair State--is it competitive?

So son has been accepted for BFA MT. Montclair is the one school we were unable to visit. Planning to see in April before making decisions. How is it here? What can he expect? He is worried about connections after graduation? And we are worried about employment? Any insight would be appreciated!!

htownmtson, I urge you to read my other posts about Montclair. We were in your shoes last year after my daughter got in but we had not yet visited and didn’t know much about it. When we did visit we were so impressed that we went back again a month later to make sure we still felt the same. The program has grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years. It felt right and my daughter took a leap and turned down 5 other programs to go there, and is VERY happy there. It is tremendously selective, the vibe in the program is very professional, and the faculty are superb, many of whom commute from the City and are professionals in the business themselves. I have seen 3 musicals there this year and all were fantastic and the level of talent of the students blew me away. Feel free to pick up the phone and call Clay James; that’s what I did last year!

Calliene, I did go back and read some of your posts. It is hard when you do your audition at Unifieds and haven’t done a campus visit or had any time to spend with the faculty. We are looking forward to our trip in April and hope it will really help son decide! Plus I would love to have ANY excuse to visit NYC! Thanks so much!

Does anyone know how many boys/girls they accept into MT? Do they have a separate acting program that they are also considered for?

They try for a class of 20, 10 boys and 10 girls. I don’t know what the numbers were this year, but last year they said around 700 auditioned. There is also a BFA in Acting which is separate. Applicants can be considered for both if they choose to be.

@htownmtson, same with us last year as my daughter auditioned at Unifieds. We then had 2 great visits in the spring. Don’t hesitate to PM me if you have any questions. Good luck!
