I would be valedictorian, but my school doesn't rank IB students?

Hi everyone.

Right now, I'm an incoming junior. Currently, I have the highest GPA in my class but as far as official class rank I'm considered "unranked". My school doesn't rank IB students for some reason. I don't understand why, but their reasoning is that the top 20 kids would all be IB students (I don't see how that's a problem, but whatever lol).

Assuming I continue to have the highest GPA in my class, would colleges that I apply to know that I had the highest GPA in my class? The valedictorian at our school is usually an AP student, and our AP program is nowhere near as difficult as our IB program.

Would my counselor just let colleges know that I would be the valedictorian if IB students were ranked?

Thanks.

Your counselor will probably say something about your position. If I were you, I’d make sure you are on good footing with him/her, but don’t come off as snooty (i.e. explicitly telling him/her that you should be valedictorian). Either way, if you have the highest grades then it will be obvious on your transcript, and your counselor should elude to the difference in difficulty between the AP and IB programs at your school.

Lots and lots of schools don’t rank–including pretty much all fancy private schools. Ranking itself is likely not useful in you cohort. You will be fine.
