Long time lurker, first time poster. We have a situation I have not seen addressed on this forum, so I thought I would ask for some collective wisdom.

D auditioned at Oklahoma City University in February, desiring to study Music Theater, which most of you know they classify as a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. A few weeks ago, we got a letter inviting her to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Music with voice as her instrument. After some initial euphoria because the letter began with the word "Congratulations," we realized that she had not been admitted to the program she was aiming for. She made her peace with that decision and shifted her focus to other programs. There is one in particular that seems to be a good fit for her that does not do rolling admissions, so we will not hear anything definitive until sometime in April although we do know she is on the short list.

So far, this is nothing unusual. Yesterday, however, we unexpectedly received another letter from OCU inviting her to pursue a BFA Acting degree in the School of Theatre, even offering her a small scholarship. We were surprised because we assumed that the previous decision was an indication that they liked her singing but not her acting. Now, it appears that the opportunity in the School of Music would exclude acting and that the opportunity in the School of Theatre would exclude singing. She obviously would like to combine the two. Any thoughts would be welcome on whether it would be worth our time to approach the college about how to make that happen and what the best way to approach them might be.

I would re-examine their materials (website, literature, etc.) and then call that appropriate people and speak with them directly. You want as much information as possible, directly from the school, regardless of the outcome of the other school your daughter is interested in. I don’t know this school in particular but we had a similar situation with a different school and found the administration very accommodating to our questions. We’re still not sure where my daughter will end up but at least we have many of our questions answered so can make an educated choice.

What the above poster said. Collect more information and wait until ALL results are in and then weigh and measure your options. It is very possible that your D will be offered admission to a BFA in MT program at a place she likes and you won’t have to worry about OCU at all!

Add to your OCU questions: If daughter matriculates can she re-audition for MT on campus and do they take transfers in from the school? Can she auditon for shows if not MT?

OCU’s BFA Acting program is reported to be quite good; and my understanding is that the voice training at OCU is exceptional. So perhaps the BFA Acting option at OCU might offer your daughter the best of both worlds: quality training as an actress PLUS the opportunity to continue her voice training with OCU’s voice and MT faculty. I don’t know if there is any cross-over between Acting and MT for performance opportunities (i.e., can Acting students audition for musical productions at OCU?) so that might be something to find out. Anyway, congratulations on the acceptance and scholarship.

kjcbpsmith: I read your post with a sense of total deja vu. My D had the exact same thing. She also got the 2nd letter yesterday with acceptance to the BFA in Acting after previously being rejected for the MT. Except in our case, they originally offered her money but now say they are not offering money. ?? It does really make you wonder what’s going on. Thought it odd too that the letter yesterday was hand-addressed. I’ve heard from others that OCU is very hard-nosed about staying within your department so I’d be sure to check out in advance any plans you might have to get vocal training. Dance training too is sometimes hard to get into if you are not a dance major (according to the tour guide on our tour). Please post if you hear more.
