I took three AP classes this year, but I don't want to take the tests because I don't want to use the credit; my classes don't require that I take them, and my philosophy is that it doesn't make sense to pay $200+ for exams I don't want to take. Would a top tier college care?

Nah, the colleges dont care if you took the test - only that you finished the course.

^ ughh i keep hearing different things about that squadus! I hope ur right…

He’s not right. Colleges will wonder why you took the course but not the exam.

It’s preferable to take the tests because they have weight in the college application process itself, whether you chose to use the credits or not.

^but the OP has already been admitted.

you can’t get rescinded for doing abysmally on your AP tests either, right?

I do have a reason if they wanted to know why I took the course but not the exam: I wanted to get a taste of college-level classes, and I am very happy I did so.

f that dude don’t take them. I am signed up for three but considering taking only the one that my school requires. I’m going to a top tier school and I don’t THINK it will be a problem at all.

@Ham: did you do this freshman, sophomore, junior years too? Like did you not take an exam in which you took a class for? I was wondering because I dont plan on taking an exam but I am worried a top college (like the one you got accepted to) would see that as a really bad sign.

omg I can’t believe people are actually worried about this. of course you won’t get rescinded if you choose not to take the test. AP exams have no bearing on your admission status. Chilllll.

Well, here’s how it is:

If you’re already admitted, you’re fine. Not taking exams won’t get you rescinded.

If you’re planning to apply, and don’t want to take any of them, you’re in a hole. That just screams “grade inflation” to colleges. If you don’t want to take one exam, then I suppose that’s understandable. If you take an ap class but don’t write the test score when applying, however, it makes the adcom think that you either slacked off or had a bad teacher, and it’s definitely not a good thing. They will assume that you would have gotten a 1 on it had you taken it, but ap test scores don’t play a very big weighting in the admissions process.
