I attended IB 132 and am enrolled in the course. However, the prof mentioned in lecture today to not attempt the course if you have not yet taken Bio 1A. I will be taking Bio 1A this semester but I am concerned that I won't be able to do well in IB132 because I did not take Bio 1A prior to the course. I did have bio in hs and already took Bio 1B and all the chem courses. For the people who took 132, how necessary was Bio 1A for 132? Would it hurt for me to "attempt" this class? Any tips??

If you got a good Bio AP or IB Bio HL score, then I would reckon you'd be fine, otherwise it is probably not a good idea.

smells like BS...
IB 132 is just an easy survey class. If anything, taking Bio1A with 132 will only reinforce the concept, as there are some overlapping topics.

Try to get as many old midterms as possible, as some questions are likely to be recycled.

Thanks for the response. I was wondering why we need Bio 1A for IB132 when MCB32 does not have any prereqs. Shouldn't they be the same? Also, I need this class to declare my major so it's crucial that I take it this semester.... so what from Bio 1A would make it easier for this class? I looked on the syllabi for both classes and IB132 seems to deal with pretty general stuff... any more tips/experiences?

IB 132/L need Bio 1A because it is physiology for biology major; it is more complicated. MCB 32/L is for non-majors and Public Health and is lesser detail.

That is also what I am wondering! Maybe it's because they are going to go very fast on the first few chapters because they expect us to already know the material...

Does anyone know the format of the IB132 exams? Are they all Multiple choice questions?? Also, what is the best way to study? Read the book throughly or not??

they are all multiple choice.
Beware of the first metabolism midterm from Brooks. Know the physiological values and how to calculate stuff. The first midterm usually has the lowest average partly because people didn't expect Brooks to throw those questions out, and partly because he's just a boring and horrible lecturer in general if you haven't noticed already. They should have some practice MT, but you can PM me for other old midterms, which may not be readily available. The only reason I didn't get screwed on the first MT was because I sort of memorized the answers. I didn't know how to calculate those physiological crap because his lecture slides are just plain ****.

Otherwise the class should be easy.

Well, this year, it seems like they are going to teach alternating lectures...or closely so...so won't the first midterm cover stuff from both professors?? Also, where can I get those practice MTs???? So they recycle their midterms??? Is there a site where I can find them??

there are a few exams floating around class - just keep asking and if you find any let us know - i think i tanked the first mid term, even though i studied pretty hard - could use all the help i can get on the second mid term and final!!!

someone also mentioned DC++ but this is not familiar to me
