I'm really conflicted between taking the IB Diploma or just taking all IB HL classes. Which one do colleges prefer? I feel that taking all HL classes is more rigorous than taking diploma (since you have to do 3 more HLs) and I would also get more credit, since both classes are taught the same material at my school.

Well, if you’re taking IB classes, you might as well get the diploma. I think the diploma might be looked upon more favorably because of the extra components required (such as CAS, extended essay, internal assessments, etc.). If you want more credit, you can take the corresponding AP exam for the IB SL courses (this is what I did). Also, it is possible to take 4 HL’s and 2 SL’s if you are a diploma candidate (it doesn’t have to be 3 HL’s and 3 SL’s).

Okay. Do colleges prefer the Diploma over Certificate?

I would say going for the diploma makes a person more well-rounded in terms of courses. Plus, there are extra components to the diploma like a Theory of Knowledge class, and External Essay, and 150 CAS hours that have to be completed. You also have to get a certain cumulative score on all your exams to actually get the diploma.

Okay, I’ve decided to do diploma. Thanks guys!
