Know a days its seems like a IB jobs are all dominated by men, and well im interested in becoming a IB and im a girl. Will this make it harder for me ? or will it give me a upper hand? Like i heard in competive schools they want to keep the % of men and women admin. at a certain level and if there barley any women that have that intrest it can give me a leg up.

-And yes i am aware of the crazy hectic and the egotisical lifestyles of IB's but thats what me seems exciting to me , the competition and the challange. Also another thing i am very good with people and i can speak 4 languages working on the 5th and i want to work international. My math skills are pretty good but i cant say its above average.

Wow, jenchow1992, I am so right there with you!
I'm of the female persuasion as well, and am completely looking forward to pursuing the challenge of Ibanking in the future!
I believe these IBs are due for a real increase in estrogen ;)

i read in an article that there is a severe shortage of female quantitative analysts/traders and that being a female who wants to work in quantitative finance may be an advantage because firms are looking to increase their diversity in the quant departments lol....im not sure about IBD though =p

I'm also a female looking into the wall street industry. I've finished a book called "Play like a man Win like a woman". The details the hardship and struggles that women deal with while in male-dominant jobs. It's really a great book that I recommend all women to read before they enter the industry.

Also ladies, did you know after becoming mothers your paycheck (at least bonus) is cut by 5%-30% while fathers is the complete opposite!

syncastar, are you serious about the paycheck?! That makes me so mad. Why do they do that? What, they don't think we'll be attractive or something after we have children? That's so sexist! Where did you read this?

Well if you research online and read books delicate to women wanting to work in male-dominated career. It's a white man's world in that industry since there's discrimination towards women & minorities. Minorities probably because white men has this huge ego and wants to remain in control above all. Women its because after we have kids we become torn between family & work. Wall street doesnt allow you to have both so they start paying you less figuring you'll leave become socialist mother while your husband brings in the bacon. Its also some of their mind set about women too, they can get away so much that we can't.

Example

Men can have affairs, Women can't
Men can yell, Women can't
Men can cry, Women can't
Men can be tough & brutal, Women can't

Results
1. Men keeps they job, Women are either fire or lost huge respect
2. Men were trained to be loud & crazy, Women were trained to be silence & elegant.
3. When men cries, he going through some distress and sometimes use it to save their job. When women cries, she very too emotional for anyone to handle and some wont mind getting rid of her without second thought.
4. When men harsh to worker they are a bit more acceptive. When women does it worker tend to call them *****es.

Stupid I know but it seems to be that. Ladies must remember you're entering a boys' club.

What !!!! why does our paycheck have such a decrease its outrageous ! omg! just becuase we wanted to start a family how do that jave anything to do with our job. That is soooo stupid and why do the guys get more money ? , one day ill have to protest against this stupid rule, arent we done with discriminating women ? What can the Male do that the females cant do ? just becuase we have differnt sex organs that does not interfere with our ability to think and we should be able to rake in the same amount of money they can to.

Well, I think discrimination on wall street is very subtle, because if it were more overt, then the CEO of Citi would not have been a minority, which he is (he's indian). Several minorities hold the position of VP, MD etc in many departments in many investment banks. I became aware of thsi by visiting the websites of these firms and looking at sample profiles.

I really don't think Wall Street is very discriminatory any more. The reason there aren't more women in finance is:

a) They're less interested in it in the first place (anecdote: Many of the girls I know in Wharton are more interested in marketing/real estate/consulting than banking)

b) After a woman spits out a baby or two, they may just turn into a housewife and not go back into banking

And why is everyone taking what "syncastar" says at face value?

Also, to the guy who thinks that attractiveness is a "prereq" in banking...have you ever visited an investment bank before?

You what your right, i shouldnt take the paycheck decrease and attractiveness thing to heart even though i have no trouble in that department lol jk! If i want to be an IB when i grow up then so be it all those males better watch out! Its time for an enlightment LADIES!

My analyst class was 87% male. Roommates' classes were closer to 75% male. I got the impression it was mostly due to interest level than any form of discrimination.
