Do you think it would be realistic for someone in the second year of IB math SL to independently study the material to take the AP Calculus BC exam in May? I would have help from teachers at my school and have an hour and twenty minute study hall twice a week during second semester this year. I’ve always had A’s in math. Thanks!!!
I took Math SL in grades 10-11, and AP Calc AB in grade 12. It doesn’t seem feasible to me, IB Math SL barely scratches the surface of AP Calc AB, much less BC. Sure, anything is possible, and you seem dedicated, but unless you’ve taken calculus before, it will be difficult to learn all the material.
IB Math SL to AP Calc AB is possible and commonly done, especially with the “new” curriculum, but not Calc BC. In addition, it doesn’t bring any real advantage in terms of admissions - calculus is calculus, unless we’re talking Cal Tech or HarveyMudd or MIT. But I’m guessing that if you’re taking Math SL, you’re not aiming for MIT.
So, essentially: use your 120mn study hall time to study, prepare for the AP Math AB test, and work on other things, but don’t bother with the BC exam.
