IB vs. AP

Do you think that not doing IB in an IB school will hurt me. I couldnt do it because Academy of Finance (rare program that very few schools have) took up too much of my schedule and my IBC said it was impossible to do both (i was in AOF starting in 10th grade, where as IB doesnt start till 11th). So instead I have taken 9 APs and 1 IB SL class. Will this hurt me at Duke?

I really don't think so - as long as you've taken challenging classes in an area of interest ( for you - business/finance) you should be fine.

yeah i dont think its that big a deal. i just went go a college meeting and a rep from boston said what really matters most is "what is available to you and how you take advantage of it" but again... it wasnt reeaaally available to you because of conflicts or whatever so i think youre fine...

:)

plus! youve definitely taken advantage of difficult classes offered... 9 aps! thats great! and definitely shows youre not doing ib just becaus eyou want to slack.

thanks, that makes me feel a little better

how do u get to be an AP scholar?

ap scholar = 3 AP tests with 3 or above- this is the lowest level, then there are progressively higher AP scholar levels, with the highest being National AP Scholar- 8 AP tests with 4 or higher

How impressive is National AP Scholar?

When I went to visit Duke, I CLEARLY remember the admissions officer telling me that the current Director of Admissions LOVES APs (which sucks for me because I'm an IB student with only 3 AP scores so far...)

Don't worry, pearlgirl. I only had 2 AP scores when I applied (psych and env. science) and 2 IB scores (Math Methods SL and Psychology SL). It won't hurt you.

Anyway, when I visited, I was told that IB was held in high esteem, but that was two years ago; it may have changed.

I saw this stat on the door of my IBC's office- IB diploma students acceptance rate at Duke (i believe class of 2003 but I could be wrong) was 38% compared to an overall rate of 22%. That stat sure didnt make my day.

^^ That stat DIDN'T make your day? Why not, sounds pretty good to me?

because im not in IB hahaha

Calm down!!! I think I've read like 5 posts by you about duke, and it's silly to worry this much. I'm applying ED as want to go as much as the next girl, but now that we've sent in our apps, there is nothing we can do. Worrying about IB vs. AP won't help you out, it will just hurt your head. What works for me is focusing on doing my other apps and keeping my grades up, so maybe that will work for you too. Good luck, and try and relax:)
