Ideas please

Posted about this on the transfer board, but didn't get much of a response...

I'm a sophomore, 1st semester, at small LAC in South Carolina. Looking to transfer because after toughing it out for 3 semesters, I don't feel like my current college is such a good fit for me socially.

Some stats:
Major: History
College GPA: 3.89
College Extracurriculars: Newspaper staff (section editor & layout staff); College Democrats (president); Students for Environmental Education (secretary); Gay/Straight Alliance; Freshman Honors Seminar (last year); Chinese scholar (traveled to China on a Maymester this past summer); International dorm resident; work study in the library
High School GPA: 4.95/5.00
SAT: 1410/2070
Rank: 2/about 275
High School Extracurriculars: Yearbook staff (editor-in-chief); Color guard; Student government (homeroom representative and senator); Beta Club; Kids Kamp volunteer; Was in a school play; Church youth group; Church Bible study; Church nursery worker; Summer job at CVS pharmacy
High School Awards: National Merit Commended Student; B-27 Club (Honor Society); Rotary Club Student of the Month

If I stay in-state, I will keep a merit scholarship that pays half of tuition, room, and board; Palmetto Fellows; and some need-based aid. I am willing to go out of state though. I think I would prefer to stay kind of close to home, although I'm not completely opposed to the idea of going far away if I was happy somewhere; however, I really don't like the cold. I would like to go somewhere where there are people at least kind of like me, where students are concerned about world issues, where there is a variety of social opportunities for students, where professors and students have close relationships, where the professors are good teachers, etc.

Any suggestions on what schools I should look into?

Thinking about (though not really sure at all):

OOS:
New College of Florida
American
Oberlin

In state:
University of South Carolina
Clemson
Winthrop

Look into

Macalaster College Fighting Scots
George Washington University Colonials
Emory University Eagles

Tulane University in New Orleans

Great Schools For History Majors:

Bowdoin College
Brown University
Centre College
Colgate University
College Of The Holy Cross
Columbia University
Drew University
Furman University
Georgetown University
Grinnell College
Hampden-Sydney College
Harvard College
Haverford College
Hillsdale College
Kenyon College
Oberlin College
Princeton University
Trinity College (CT)
Tulane University
University Of Virginia
Wabash College
Washington And Lee University
Yale University

Thanks for all your responses. (Although I'm not sure that Brown, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton are in my range...) Any other ideas? I would love to go somewhere in the South where I'm not the only liberal, but the two seem fairly contradictory. :/

If you want to stay in the south, New College of Florida will be your best bet. Otherwise you will have to look else where.

bumpity bump

Maybe Hendrix in Arkansas and Centre in Kentucky. Both are very good schools and I think they are both pretty liberal.

Hendrix is liberal, Centre is very conservative.

buuuuuuuump

Aim for the top schools. Why not? You have done well so far in your college career and if you intend to stick with history, you will need the kind of connections that you can make at a more prestigious school to get into a good graduate program. Also, I would bet the south carolina isn't great for dating if you're gay. You may have better luck outside of Carolina.

lol, I'm actually not gay. I just try to be supportive of the few of those at my school who are. But maybe I will consider some top schools, now that you mention it. My worries lie mostly in finances though.
