Now I am sure I'd get in trouble with all the proactive parents out there, but here is a question for the true FA gurus out there. Our IDOC deadline is March 1st. Due to the fact that DH is self employed and other changes, I doubt that we will have out taxes ready before April 15th. Has anybody tried to approach IDOC to see if they will accept 2011 returns, at least provisionally?

I am in a similar situation (S-corp, no returns in sight), and do not think they will accept 2011 returns. They can’t finalize your kid’s FA without the 2012 returns, period. I have just been emailing with my accountant today, trying to pin down a date when she can commit to having the corporate returns done so I can notify the schools that there will be a delay and when I expect to be able to mail to them. Don’t know what else to do this year… I have already submitted the FAFSA and CSS Profile with estimated information.

I just think you will waste a lot of time copying and mailing 2011 info that they will not use.

Have you tried calling College Board?

It is not the CollegeBoard that ultimately wants the paperwork, it is the colleges themselves. IDOC is just a service that packages it (scans it, I assume), then sends it along.

The IDOC instructions specifically say:

There is also an FAQ section for IDOC where the question is asked about what to do if you can’t meet the deadline. The response is:

There is also a question about whether you can submit the IDOC materials in more than one IDOC packet. Their answer is NO… this is the actual text:

So should I call that one school and try to reason with them? I have a feeling that they will give me a standard reply: “submit as soon as possible, nothing is guaranteed until we have a complete package”. Oh well, the more expensive and exclusive a college is , the harder it is to get through to them with an unusual set of circumstances. Thanks for your help, intparent.

PAmom18, I think you will find that every parent with a small business is in this situation this year. I think they are going to have a lot of late submissions, as a lot of people have small businesses or own an interest in one. I plan to notify ALL of the schools by email about the delay. If it means the FA packages are late coming back and we honestly can’t make a decision about schools by the end of April , I will ask the schools for an extension on the decision date at that time (I believe most will grant one if requested for a reason like this).

What intparent said! The cover sheet required for the iDOC submission doesn’t even have a little bubble for you to fill in for 2011 files.

PAMom - it’s always worthwhile to e-mail or call. Sometimes your fin aid rep is listed on the website. Do some googling and direct your question to a rep rather than a student working the generic front office account, if you can.
