Hi. I am current an IEOR student. And i am thinking of doing finance in the future. Anyone know which one is better for my career, IEOR or business?
Thanks for the help

I've often pondered the same question. I'm in the same boat as you. What area of finance are you looking to head into? If you want to do quant stuff, I think IEOR is definitely better than business. You'll learn all about stochastic processes and programming, etc and you'll be well prepared. I believe IEOR is the perfect major for if you want to go into financial engineering. The way I see it, if you want to go into finance, do some summer internships at some financial institutions and that should give you an edge. If you have time, take some finance classes.

Also note that financial institutions hire a lot of engineers from top schools. If you look at the list of IEOR graduates, a lot of them are working for financial institutions. The IEOR professors also do research in financial engineering.

I think IEOR gives you a much stronger math background. The IEOR curriculum also offers classes such as engineering economics, which teaches some finance stuff. The rest of the stuff you can learn in training for when you get a job.

Thanks for the information. I want to be an analysist in a company. What i am concerned with is that i can still take IEOR courses even i major in business. But it would be hard to take business courses because the seats are reserved for business student. So does majoring in business gives me a better chance?

Hey, I'm interested in quant finance as well. I'm majoring in Computer Science and Econ though. I was just wondering if you guys could offer any suggestions for specific courses that would be good to take. Any UGBA, IEOR, math courses that are useful?

I'm planning on taking Econ 136, which is financial economics. But I have no idea how similar or different that is to UGBA 104, intro to finance. Can anyone tell me more about that also?
