Colleges still get your GPA and school profile. From that, they can tell how good your school is, and thus presumably how good you are. And that’s all class rank is really intended to show.

They’ll also look a little more at your standardized testing, and how that compares with other applicants from your school and other schools. Of course SATs don’t necessarily reflect school performance, so as well as GPA and school profile as the previous post mentioned, they’ll probably pay more attention to your teacher/counselor recs. If they all give a similar indication as to your rank within a class, then your overall rank is probably pretty implicit (.e.g if they all say ‘best student in career’ then it’s pretty obvious you’d be near, or at, the top).

Some schools may also use graded samples of your coursework to judge your calibre and see if they want to take you. Also, application forms usually ask for the highest GPA in your graduating class and the number of students who share your GPA.
