If Asked to Write an Essay, can I submit a 500 word short story instead?

Really curious...I don't think I could write a good essay with the topics available to me, but I have a good scene swimming through my head for a short story on one of the topics.

If it helps, this is the prompt...
"What do you think is the greatest challenge the world will face in your generation?" with a bit more attached.

Please respond-essay due soon!

Go for it. Originality is best.

Remember the point of an essay is to reveal something about yourself as a candidate, even if the question doesn't really seem to be asking about you (assuming this is for college or an academic program?). So if you take the creative approach, be sure to somehow suggest qualities about your character. It would help to know what the essay is for, though.

I was going to say the same thing as schitz. The prompt of a college essay is not an end in itself. The point of the prompt is not to get an answer to the question. The point of a college essay is to show who you are, how you think, what you're like, etc. The topic is really secondary to "YOU."

If this isn't for a college essay, nevermind.

That's what I did for one of my short UC essays.

The prompt asked if there was anything else they should know about me and i was like "No, so i'll tell you a story instead."

If it is a good story, then yes, certainly... reading a million practically-the-same essays is terribly dull
