<p>Taking a gap year can be a valuable experience, but you have to prove to colleges that you are doing something productive with your time. And be prepared for another difficult admissions season. Your best bet is to apply to a wide swatch of reaches, matches, and safeties and accept one of those offers this coming year, even if you end up deferring for a gap year. You can keep that acceptance and reapply to your reaches next year if you want.</p>
<p>To answer your original question: You won’t be penalized for reapplying, but it’s unlikely you’ll be accepted the second time around without bolstering your application during the gap year.</p>
<p>I am going to apply as a freshman. The Ivies are the first priority but yeah I’m also going to apply to other top and mid-range universities. I am still looking into the safety schools. I haven’t decided them yet.</p>
