I absolutely LOVE medicine but I hate chemistry and find biology just OK. However, I read med books for fun and Grey's Anatomy is my favorite show!!! Would I make it through a pre-med major and med school? Would I be a good doctor? FYI I have no parental pressure and I'm not in it for the money.

You can’t be a doctor if you hate science. End of story. Frankly, you wouldn’t even make it through the pre-med pre-reqs, let alone med school which is all science, all the time.

To clarify I don’t hate chemistry I just get bored easily. Also, I like biology when it talks about organs or cell interaction. I just hate planets and outer space.

Well, if you hate planets and outer space, proficiency in those objects are not required to become a doctor.

Do you or don’t you hate chemistry? Tbh I feel like you’re just looking for someone to pat you on the back and encourage you to be a doctor even though it’s clear you aren’t really cut out to be one. In pre-med you will need to take chem, organic chem, biochem, and biology courses with 3-4 hour labs and tons of homework just to satisfy the prerequisites for med school. Once you get into med school you will ONLY be doing science. Grey’s Anatomy is a drama. I would encourage you to pursue a career in a field you are truly passionate about. BTW the study of planets and outer space is astronomy, which is neither biology nor chemistry.

I find the human body and medicine fascinating but I’m often bored in science class. If I major in pre-med would it mainly consist of that?

Are you a high school senior currently? It does not sound as if you have considered college very carefully. There is no such thing as a “pre-med major,” but there are set prerequisites, which include Biology, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, Calculus, et al. You do not have to major in any of those subjects, although a high percentage of pre-medical students do. You do need to earn very high grades in all of those subjects if you are at all serious about medicine. There are other paths to health care professions, including Physical Therapy, Nursing, Physician’s Assistant, etc., but they also require a strong scientific foundation.

no I am a junior in high school

You can become an OD

Med school (and prep for med school) requires more chemistry than biology. It sounds like you are fascinated by the qualitative aspects of medicine, but not the true science. As the parent of a student seriously considering medicine, I would agree with Woogzmama - you sound more likely to enjoy some of the related fields.

As an aside - no one should go into medicine for the money anymore. Those days ended when managed care bagan to dominate the payer market back in the 90s. Successful doctors today have a passion for the science and patient care that drives them to make the necessary tradeoffs in terms of the cost and lifestyle. It is definitely not for everyone!

There’s a difference between hating your high school chemistry class and hating chemistry. Plenty of doctors are the former. Less so the latter, but you might find you change your mind about chemistry. The best thing you can do right now is keep an open mind and try to fight that impulse to get bored in class. I’m sure if you want to be a doctor, that’s possible, but you don’t have to decide anything at this point.

The simple answer, is “Yes.” You can become a doctor if you hate Chemistry, as long as you earn excellent grades in your Chemistry classes.

I burst out laughing when I saw this question lol

^^^ Can you be the President of the United States and hate to Speak to the public?

Grey’s anatomy is just a show: the people aren’t doctors, they are actors wearing scrubs and white coats. Maybe you should ask yourself if it’s really medicine you’re passionate in or if it’s just the ‘glamour’ of being a doctor that’s attractive to you. Anyway even if you don’t like biology, pharmaceuticals and chemical engineering could still be an option (although chemistry is extremely important).
