IF one was lucky enough to choose, which one would you choose....Yale or Dartmouth?

Posted in Yale and Dartmouth forums

The real question is which one would you choose and why? What is it that you find appealing about both schools as to why you would want to attend either or neither?

I was in that position last year, and I chose Dartmouth. It’s a tough decision, so good luck to you.

In many ways, Yale and Dartmouth are polar opposites (especially when it comes to location).

If you want to go based on prestige, Yale is the obvious choice; at this level though, prestige shouldn’t play much of a factor.

This pretty much sold me on Yale.

I think Columbia and Dartmouth are closer to polar opposites. New Haven may be urban, but it’s such an unattractive city relative to NYC that Yale, like Dartmouth, is a bit insular. Of course, that’s just the effect of the location, not the location itself; admittedly, Dartmouth and Yale are in very different settings.

Yale and Dartmouth are far more alike than they are different

^I would say that academically speaking, they are very similar (they are close in class size, similar attention given by professors, etc.).

But in terms of living style (frats/dorms v residential colleges) and location (urban v rural), they are quite different.

Saying Yale and Dartmouth were “polar opposites in many ways,” was, admittedly, an overstatement.

yale. end of story.

i chose dartmouth over yale

a few things to consider:
1)dartmouth is on quarter terms; yale is on semester terms
2)dartmouth can get pretty damn cold (hit negative 20s or lower this winter); yale is mild compared to hanover winter. you could invest in a northface, or go to yale.
3)yale is more prestigious(although many dartmouth students like to disagree, i set aside all biases and confirm this); many dont even know what dartmouth is.
4) dartmouth population is very small. approx 4000 undergrad. my high school was bigger than this.
5) hanover is basically a small town. you need a car to burst the bubble. you can jaywalk here, and cars will almost always stop, unless youre an idiot wearing black at night. yale students, i heard, are hated by the new haveners.
6) dartmouth is known for its greek scene. if you like to party, this is the place. however, people get their act together when its time for mid-terms, finals, etc. they know how to balance socializing and academics. yale only has a handful of fraternities and sororities, but not that prominent.
7) its easy to get internships and student jobs at dartmouth. not sure about how that is at yale.

cant think of any more. might update once i get some sleep.

I think the cultural scene – available to every student – is tremendous at Yale. From the museums and theaters to recitals and acapella groups – the offerings are great. Especially when the keg parties grow old, you can find a variety of things to do.

same could be said about dartmouth. people who dont like the greek scene, or GDIs in general play frisbee on the green, go to west lebanon, etc. not everyone at dartmouth engages in binge drinking.
