If state residency is checked does that mean they prefer those in the same state?

I know public schools prefer those in state but I see some private schools with the “state residency” checked as considered. They are private schools so why would have to prefer in state students unless I am misunderstanding it? I also see “geographic residence” checked too so I am kind of confused.

It could also mean that if you’re from an underrepresented state, you’ll get a bit of an admissions boost compared to someone from a state where they get hundreds or thousands of applicants.

some private schools, NY included, get state money-perhaps that is earmarked for state students.

Then what is the difference between geographic residence and state residency?
