If you are a fan of the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon

Did Mr W ever know “Leery”? Or was he just projecting a Chinese first-wife status to what he thought was Jamie’s only wife?

^^^I think he knew OF her.

Voyager is definitley my 2nd favorite of the series. I had Outlander almost committed to memory I’ve read it so many timed. Not so much with the subsequent books (except for specific loved scenes). I hope some of the adaptations her on out won’t bother me as much with the rest of the series.

I have to say I agree with @Snowdog about Claire. Although I think her face is a good representaion of Claire, her personality is not spot on. She’s too “sweet”. Something is just off, the same as Jamie. I found the other’s personality representations much truer to the books (even if the looks were a bit different). Dougal and Murtagh come to mind. Both completely different looking than described in the books…but they were spot on. I thought Jenny and Ian’s were true. Although Sam and Cat are lovely to see, and if you haven’t read the books you wouldn’t know any difference, but those of us have…they are almost imposters to me.

I will agree with the comment about Claire and humor missing from the TV persona. I actually think some of that is due to the writing.

I’m coming to the end of Voyager in just a few more bike rides, I think. So I will have to choose another. I found Dragonfly in Amber so difficult to get through, I ended up skipping a lot of the “intrigue” sections. Perhaps it will go better for me on audio book.

I think the woman who plays Jenny is really good. She’s expressive and interesting to watch even with some of DG’s weirder dialogue (like her description of what it feels like to be pregnant…so odd). With an English instead of a Scot accent, she’d actually have made an excellent Claire.

Geillis is also well done…not quite as I pictured her (wasn’t she said to have 1968 hippie, flat-ironed type of hair?) but no complaints on the acting at all.

Yes, Geillis had straight blond 1960 hair. I couldn’t figure out why they made her a redhead, but one explanation is to make her different from Loaghaire. I also loved Jennie, and found her explantion of pregnancy ridiculous. I thought that even in the book.

@NRbsb4…is this your first read of DIA. I felt the same on my first read. I originally thought DIA was just not as good as Outlander…somewhat lacking. I had the first 6 books to read back to back when I started with the series. When I did my first reread, I actually enjoyed DIA quite a bit and was surprised at that.

@conmama, no I read all the books in order. But I had so much trouble getting through DIA. Probably because I was so stunned by the opening that I wanted to know RIGHT NOW how that had come to be, so a lot of the stuff in between was just too much. Too much intrigue, too much of a setting I wasn’t interested in at that time (ironic since I love Paris and have lived there for a while and visited many times), etc. I don’t know. I would just skip big portions, trying to just get through it.

I am hoping that if I listen to it while riding my bike, it will go easier and have more meaning to me. When listening, I can’t fast forward, at least not without going to quite a bit of trouble.

I think that pretty much decides it: Dragonfly in Amber will be my next audio book!

Listening to DIA today on the bike: it occurred to me that I wish a had a dollar for every time someone in a Diana Gabaldon novel grows “pale” upon hearing any kind of surprising, upsetting, or shocking news.

Do you and everyone you know get pale at the drop of a hat?!

Lol, just one of those idiosyncrasies of DG, I guess.

I just finished reading “Written in My Own Hearts Blood” which was released June 2. After the Outlander DVD series finished I moved onto the books and haven’t been able to stop! Diana Gabaldon has a real talent for making her characters come alive to the extent that reading her books makes you feel like you’re catching up with what’s going on with your extended family IMO.

@AlbionGirl, that book was published in June of 2014.

@Nrdsb4

I just got the paperback version which was released this year. You’re right though I hadn’t thought to look at the hardback version which was released in 2014. That makes me happy…less time to wait for the next book :slight_smile:

Yup, that and her inability to resist the temptation for Claire to both meet and have her “décolletage” admired by every major male historical figure in whatever period she happens to inhabit.

@AlbionGirl - did you watch that first half before reading any of the books? I did that…I know there must be a lot of people who came to love these books via the TV series.

@OHMomof2
Yes! at the end of the first half of the DVD set I had to find out what happened next.

Me too! I read for hours that first night and hardly stopped except to sleep a little through the rest :slight_smile:

@AlbionGirl, wow! That’s a lot of reading in six months! Which one or ones are your favorites?

That’s a tough decision since all the books have some great parts in them. Overall however I think I’d pick “Drums of Autumn” since I loved the description of Jamie and Claire starting their lives as pioneers at Fraser’s Ridge and the fact that Jamie got to see both Bree and William. The introduction of Rollo was also a big plus since I’m a huge dog fan :o3

Well, I’m a little over halfway through Dragonfly in Amber on audio book, and I have to say, I’ve enjoyed it very much. I really skipped over much of it the first time, which is a shame, I guess.

SPOILERS:

Jamie and Claire have made peace with the tragedy of Faith, Jamie’s disingenuous way of keeping his promise to Claire but getting his own way, Claire’s method of gaining his freedom from the Bastille, all for “the cause,” and her dishonesty in the face of Jamie’s direct question. They are on to Lollybroch. I don’t remember any of the next section. I’m looking forward to it.

Cast for season two so far:

I forget a couple of these characters, may need to re-read before next year.

omg, could little Fergus be any cuter?

Hmm, don’t see Brianna or Roger.
