My school's making me read this book...

Into the Forest by Jean Hegland, it kind of sucks so far.

Anyone else have assigned summer reading?

Mountains Beyond Mountains (Tracy Kidder) - haven't read it yet. But from the summary, it seem kinda boring as well.

I read excerpts from Mountains Beyond Mountains in my history class...it's written in a very understable, narrative way, and the story about Haiti and the humanitarian work of one man is actually more fascinating than it originally seems. I wish we had read more of it.

I loved Mountains beyond Mountains. I read it when it first came out about three years ago. And jamien is right, the book is very easy to understand.

But back to the OP, my year, we didn't have to read anything because they told us to be aware of what was going on in the political world (it was the year of the election, and we were supposed to discuss the current political climate) but then the next year, they'd gone back to having incoming freshmen read.

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver - haven't started it yet.
We also have to do some type of poetry project and we have optional Bible reading; it can't officially be assigned because I attend a public school, and they can't test us on it, but they do recommend it for "further understanding of the literature read during the course of the upcoming year."

no we don't...thank God...I had required summer reading every year of my high school career

i have to read Life On The Color Line. it actually looks pretty interesting. if only i could find my copy...

erm, no one's going to care if you don't read the "assigned" reading so don't worry about it so much :P

I have to read Mean Genes for AP Psych

Incoming freshman have to read My Sister's Keeper. They said they'd send it to us in the mail this summer....

i have to read One Nation Underprivileged. w00t! so far, it's pretty interesting albeit a touch redundant.

The Tempest(I cheated and saw the play). We also have to watch Forbidden Planet.

Zabelle....

Something about DNA? They haven't sent it to me yet, but honestly, im excited to read it...

Mountain Beyond Mountains is awesome! At our school, the town Educational Enrichment Fund bought every kid and teacher a copy of the book, and every teacher had to incorporate the book into his/her class in some way for a short period of time. Then, Tracy Kidder (the author) came and gave us a talk. His presentation was kinda boring though, and just reiterated the points made in the book.

This makes me wanna read the book.
I wonder how many other schools require incoming freshman to read Tracy Kidder's book.

I have to read the Great Gatsby...again
