If you are/have a homeschooler above the cutoff

Would you be interested in sharing thoughts/concerns/issues as we go through the application process? The packet (almost) makes me wish I had a guidance office to handle it all for us! Application season is a whole different animal when you are teacher/guidance and administration, plus watching the student handle his/her end.

I, too, am a homeschool mom and I definitely can relate to how you are feeling! I have learned so much and been sometimes overwhelmed with the new role of guidance counselor for my son. I am a little nervous about the outside reference because we have not used any outside teachers…I am wondering who I can utilize to write this reference. What are your plans for that?

My son has taken one CC course - He got an A, but the prof was a VERY bad communicator, so there’s no way my son will be asking him. He’s currently taking 2 AP courses online from PA AP Homeschoolers – We wish we’d known about them before 12th grade!! Anyway, those teachers are willing to write college references late in the fall, when they’ve had a chance for some evaluation – too late for this. So, we are in the same boat.

I called NMSC to check on this and the “endorsement”, and they said any non-family member who knows him well enough to write about him in terms of leadership/service, etc. will do. The person I have in mind runs a homeschool enrichment facility (mainly non-academic clubs) and has known him for 5 years.

Have you decided whether to do the application online or not? If not, just a heads up – If you do it online, your student completes his portion, you do the school’s, and when those are both done, you send it on to the person who writes the recommendation, who also does the endorsement. So make sure to explain that to them ahead of time, because the language for the endorsement doesn’t really make sense in terms of homeschooling, but that’s the way it is. (Part F) Otherwise, if you think you might want to have the endorsement completed by a different person, you might want to do the paper version of the application. (I found out the hard way, by creating the online application.)

If you want to email or friend in Facebook, private message me. I’d love to have someone to hash this stuff out with. (Look - I ended with not one, but 2 prepositions. I should be shot by the grammar police.)

Same boat, D’s AP’s were self-studied. College Dual Enrollment Online through Cedarville University so no personal relationships. College Dual Enrollment for one class at Local U last year with disorganized professor with large lecture style classes - no personal relationship and he has left the college.
I am thinking about using a parent advocate from Homeschool Honor Society who could at least atest to leadership skills or possibly the tutor from Research/Debate class and Logic class.
I am thinking of passing on the online app because we may want to review the recommendation letter. We had a friend ask for a second letter from a second source because they said the first letter was poorly written. (Grammar and such).

Homeschoolingmom- what dual enrollment classes did your daughter take through Cedarville? How did they go? Just curious. I haven’t heard any opinion of them…We are from the Flint area. How about you?

Maura-So the person who would write the online recommendation would also have to “endorse” your school and the student? That is interesting. I was hoping to do it online, but not sure now…

PM sent to mom-to-five

We are doing the online, and it seems pretty easy. I finished my part in an hour. I have given my daughter a deadline of the end of weekend for her part, and then we send it off to one of her online teachers (who has actually met her)

This is much easier than the whole CA process.
