If you go to an average university and people ask you where you go..

Do you lie and say you go to a better or worse one? Do you post threads for sympathy saying that you have mental disorders or that people hate you because you think you'll never be anything more or less than average?

Nope. Actually, my school is very well respected for not being in the top whatever the silly US News rankings are out of. We had this discussion on one of our sports forums, and people said that others had confused it for an Ivy on the West Coast. I won’t complain about that.

It really depends on your socioeconomic point of reference. If you come from an affluent area and were raised by parents with elite educations, then going to a the non-flagship state school may be frowned upon. In these circles, you may feel embarrassed by your college affiliation. If you come from more modest roots, the fact that you’re attending college at all is quite often means for admiration by your family or peers.

The thing you have to realize is that most people don’t know of the rankings you’re referring to and frankly do not care. In many areas, actually, the local state schools are viewed more favorably than “top tier” schools on the USNWR, for which the locals know little about.

haha, is this serious?

ugh, I am SO ASHAMED that I don’t go to a top school! I’m worthless! I’ll never amount to anything! I better just lie so that people don’t know what a failure I am. My life is so hard.

I’m feeling a little slow today, so I’m going to need to have to ask, is this a parody thread?

I tell everyone that I go to Harvard on a full 4 year scholarship, and to make me enroll, Harvard had to give me a 5,000 sq feet house and name a building after me.

I tell them everything hello_motto just said, but on top of that, the university hired me a maide and butler. I also drive a lambo to class.

I live in an affluent area, and my mom went to an Ivy and I don’t go to the state flagship. I’m not embarrassed about that at all. It also wasn’t frowned upon, which has to do with the fact that my dad attended the same school.

Inventing a “better” school for yourself sounds ridiculous enough, but why would you name a worse school?

Just a building? Lame. It’s like they’re not even trying…
