Lets say you were walking down the street, and happen to find a stash of cash. You count it, and find out its one million dollars. Would you do the right thing, and send the cash to the police in hopes that the right person will claim it, would you blow it all and have fun, or give some to charity, and spend it on people you know will need it most?

I always wondered about it. The morally right thing to do is give it to the police. But, spending it seems tempting. If you give it to charity or spending it on people in need is also the good thing, but its not your money. So it won't be right either. What would you do, and what do you think is the right thing to do.

There aren’t many legit reasons to have a million bucks in cash in a form that could just be dropped on the street. The money is dirty. Run away and pretend you never saw it.

First I’d look to see if there are witnesses, or video cameras, or whatever, around. I’d look pretty hard, and maybe think if I’ve exposed myself to any cameras hiding in a nearby window that I wouldn’t be able to find. If there was nothing around, I’d then be very cautious not to leave a fingerprint anywhere in the vicinity. If there was something around, or if I thought I’d exposed myself, or if I was paranoid, I’d quickly get a nearby homeless crazy man to do the job for me (promising something in return), of course hiding behind some sunglasses, wearing a hat, and talking to him with an accent at that point.

I’d take the money, then google search from a faraway public library computer (of course wearing gloves while doing so) places where one can safely store large sums of cash anonymously. Within the month I’d probably convert the money into gold or some other precious commodity that won’t deteriorate in value like cash does. Within a year I’d consider investing some, if not all, of the money, in something other than the gold market.

I would not tell anyone for a long while (like until at least fifty years down the line) for risk of blackmail. I probably wouldn’t tell my family, although I’d have to get an excuse for all this money (investing in a friend’s startup comes to mind).

When I get out of college (three years from now), the plan was always to live on very low means for a few years until I want to settle down in life. When I want to do so, then I’d start withdrawing the money (probably 2 million at that point) to supplement my very enjoyable (likely low paying) job. Maybe I’d volunteer at that point to justify this morally, although I don’t know if I’d feel that guilty. Whoever drops 1 million on the street likely doesn’t need it that badly.

assuming there’s no way i’d get in trouble for it, i would take it. i wouldn’t feel too bad for anyone dumb enough to drop a million bucks. honestly, i think most people who say they would turn it in would change their minds fast if they actually got their hands on the money and they knew they wouldn’t get caught taking it.

i’d probably use part of it to put my boyfriend and myself through school and buy us a nice apartment. i’d give some to my family and save the rest.
