Which would YOU choose and why? I need some advice.

I wouldn’t choose NYU. They have TERRIBLE finanancial aid.
I heard a lot of good things about the New School, like eugene lang and parsons.

AHH this decision is so hard even though I still have my WHOLEEEEEEEEE senior year to go through (ugh). I just want to apply NOW and start college NOW!

I just feel like NYU is my DREAM SCHOOL but way too expensive and I want to have a life after college like traveling, working, and actually having fun without having to conserve my money for 15 years after college. I love the location of NYU too.

The New School is really hip and trendy and I really like it, except its a little on the expensive side also. I would be going to Eugene Lang for Culture and Media and I heard that you CANNOT do a minor/double major in the school of general studies which really sucks b/c that’s where the foreign languages are and I wanted to double major/minor in one! Ahhh…I love the area its in too.

CUNY Hunter and Baruch are just making EVERYTHING even more harder. They’re tempting me with their cheap tuition and Macaulay Honors College. I’m really attracted to them because of their cheap tuition, but I don’t know if they’re right for me. I’d rather be in Greenwich Village than the Upper East Side. Also, their names aren’t as big as NYU or The New School. Also, there are no dorms. I would probably go to these if I were accepted into the Macaulay Honors College since pretty much EVERYTHING is paid for, yet I hear its extremely hard to get into macaulay at hunter.

NYU is a very good school and the best academically on this short list. If you are one of their top students, they might offer you very good aid. I have a friend who got nearly a full-ride there, despite the qualms about the “bad” financial aid.

My older brother is attending Cuny Hunter. From how he talks about it, I don’t think he likes it very much. I’ll ask him sometime and get back to you.

NYU doesn’t really have a campus, either. So if you’re wanting a school spirit/community feel, NYU wouldn’t be the best place to go.
Actually, Eugene Lang is actually right next to NYU.
Are you a boy? because Barnard would be GREAT if you weren’t.

uh, i worded that weird…if you were a girl, you should go to Barnard.

wait.
I worded that WEIRDLY…if you ARE a girl, go to Barnard.

that’s better.

My friends at New School have had major problems and there have been recent demonstrations and upheavals there that demonstrate the difficulty administration is having managing that school and taing student and faculty concerns seriously. I wouldn’t want to be there.

I would suggest you apply to the NYU Liberal Studies Program, as it gives you the chance to get more personal with faculty and study in more of a small LAC like setting rather than the big school that NYU is.

you can’t apply to the Liberal Studies Program directly.
Honestly I think LSP is a bad idea.
You don’t really have a choice in what electives you take, and you’re stuck there for two years feeling like you’re a back-up kid who NYU kept to get more money. You have to maintain a 3.0 GPA average to go to where you ORIGINALLY applied. I hear it’s difficult to change schools for your junior year in case you change your mind about your major.

I’ve visisted all the campuses and did info tours and toured the campus OFFICIALLY at NYU and The New School and I really liked them both a lot. NYU is my first choice, but the money is making me weary. I REALLY want to go there, but I just don’t know about all the debt I could be in. The New School is really different and eccentric and its just a cool school. Hunter is just “okay” in my opinion. I don’t know if its for me or not…but I do like the CHEAPPPPPPPPP tuition…

I’m just stuck!

go to columbia university

oh geez NYU hands down. now if this were between Fordham and NYU or NYU and Columbia and they offered you better packages then it would be a different story, but believe me I have heard terrible things about The New School and CUNY. Don’t waste the next four years of your life there.

You need to apply to more schools outside of NYC. But CUNY schools are highly underrated.

If you are not attending Stern or Tisch, NYU and major debt is not better than the McCauley’s honors program at Baruch & Hunter. Unless you were admitted through the HEOP program. even if you get NYU’s top scholarship of 25K/year, you will have more thatn 100k of debt after graduation (unless your $ is not an issue).

if you are looking to go into Business- choose baruch
If you are looking into Social Sciences, education, health- choose Hunter.

Have you looked into the Fordham campus at Lincoln Center? It’s a good compromise, they have both a communications (media) program and international studies, which I assume includes foreign languages. They are very open to creating your own program and double majoring. We went on an admitted students visit last week and the Dean personally told us that. It is pretty expensive, though, but depending on your SAT scores you may be offered generous aid. It’s worth applying and seeing what they offer.

I’m at the New School right now, and I would murder to be at NYU.

Shoot for the moon. Don’t take a consolation prize like Eugene Lang. It’s a “cool” school, but that’s not what you should be looking for.

Well, there is St. John and also Pace U. Nobody given a thought about these two universities.

[For the record, I am in CUNY CCNY.]

My S got a huge scholarship in grants from NYU (we borrow $10K per year, total). So it’s possible for them to pay more than $25K. (We have a very low EFC also.) NYU is a great school but only for those who are very independent on all levels. It can be very, very isolating. Don’t underestimate the isolation. And money is a huge deal, obviously. I’m interested in those with CUNY experience as my D is thinking of applying to Macaulay’s honors program. I realize CUNY itself has problems, but what about this program? ANybody know?

New School is isolating as well. Hard to make friends outside of the dorms. Lots of international students, but it still doesn’t feel diverse.

The administration does have a LOT of red tape. And the whole school’s in upheaval (read the New York Times articles for some insight). I’m actually transferring out.

How is PACE? What are your guys’ experiences with going to college in NYC. I really want to go to college there! What do you do for fun?
