If You Had To Narrow These Down...

yodelleaheywho, I'm a rising freshman class of 2009 at URoch, so that is how i got that information ;) I did a LOT of research on the school..it kinda fits your needs pretty well for a match.

Thanks a lot. It's weird how inaccurate PrincetonReview is sometimes.

If your that focused on sciences, I wouldn't think about removing Bryn Mawr or Mt. Holyoke, I'd cut Reed, and consider cutting Smith (replace with Wellseley, MUCH better for the science, MUCH better overall).

Thank you for the suggestions, Cre8tive1. I want to visit Reed before making any decisions on that front. And I'll look into Wellesley.

BUMPity BUMP BUMP

Which are you planning on visiting now

The thing with Wellesley is that it will go on your reach list. It's the 4th ranked school in the country, and they are very much in search of students with the "intangibles." Mount Holyoke and Smith are great matches for you, so don't remove them.

Don't fret, beginning :); Mount Holoke and Smith are definitely staying on the list. I don't think I'll end up applying to Wellesley. It's just something about which to think.

Also, what do you think of me adding Swarthmore as a reach?

I was surprised it wasn't on your list since it fits virtually every one of your criteria to a "T", including very strong Bio, Psych, and Linguistics departments. Swat is #3 in per capita production of Bio PhDs over the last 10 years (behind CalTech and Reed). #2 in per capita Psych PhDs, behind Pomona (tied with Barnard and Vassar). #1 in per capita Linguistics PhDs (tied with St. Johns, Reed, and Grinnell).

It is a school where tailoring an individual course of study or special major is almost the rule rather than the exception. It would be very easy to tailor a combo of Bio, Psych, and Linguistics into something that makes sense -- whether that's a Special Major or some combo of major/minor.

Of the Phila. schools, I would think Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore are closer to your criteria than Haverford. All three will probabably match your social scene description a little closer than Williams or Amherst, which have pretty significant drinking cultures. Of the three Phila schools, Haverford appears to have the most preppy/drinking social scene, although I doubt anyone would call it a "party" school by national standards. Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore bookend Haverford in terms of admissions difficulty.

I like most all of the schools on your list.
The two schools that stuck out a bit were Marlboro and New College of Florida. Not saying that they aren't appropriate choices, but they are very different from you other schools and probably tend to attract "counter-culture" students (or whatever they call "hippies" these days). Most of your other schools are pretty buttoned-down academically, although some lean a tad towards the quirky, geek side.

BTW, from what little I know, Reed is very strong in the sciences. Probably a bit more "hippy" (somebody give me today's lingo!) than most of your East Coast schools, but very strong academically.

Thank you, intersteddad.
