If you have Florida Prepaid and/or Bright Futures

My FASFA has been processed but I still have not received anything in the mail yet. One of my classmates filed her FASFA after me and has already received their loan information...? Has anyone received anything yet?

nah nothing here

Yeesh, now I'm a little worried. I doubt my family would be able to contribute a dime to my college education when I go next year (and I have about $100 saved up), so here's hoping I'll get some nice grants.

Questions:

1) BF will cover my classes, food, dorm, and fees, right?

2) $150 for a textbook? Ouch. The $300 that BF gives for texts, is it only if you buy the texts at your school or can you get them elsewhere?

3) Lab fees and such... how much do they run, and how much of that will BF cover?

Thanks for all of the help.

Ehhh i got bad news for ya man

1) BF will only cover your TUITION and tuition related fees. Dorm and food is NOT covered. BF will grant $300 a semester to help with other stuff. What you generally need to estimate is about $4-6k a year of room and food for a YEAR (not bad). Gov financial aid will cover a lot of that if your low income

2) The $300 is for texts, its for anything you want. You can buy them MAD cheaper from websites, i got them bookmarked but ill find em later

3) BF covers $300 a semester for lab fees

BF basically only pays for you classes (~$2000 per semester). If you live on-campus (~$4000 for the year) and meal plan (~$2200 for the year).

...so about $10,000 for the year, which is very inexpensive compared to other schools

UMiami is about $55,000-60,000 per year with all expenses added in.

Yeah believe what asmaj says. I have a friend who just got a bill for preregistration for his school for $42,000 payable IN FULL in august. ouch

payments for UF tution is monthly. not full. that may help you.

Do they require a meal plan for freshman? There's only 2 dining halls on campus? I thought I saw an eatery near Murphree.

No, you do not have to have a meal plan. It's completely optional.

Well, there are a lot of places to eat. There are two dining areas for the meal plan, one by Broward (Broward Dining) and the other on by the North, East... dorms and by the stadium (called GC, it's at that location because that's where all the athletes eat, so you'll see many football, basketball players there all the time).

The other places are places where you use your flex bucks. The one you saw by Murphee is the Raquet Club food court. There they have Burger King, cheese steaks, Boar's Head Subs, and some homecooked food place (chicken, potatoes, etc.). Then there is the Hub where they have Chick-Fil-A, Quiznos, Einstein Bagels, and some Juice thing. Then there's Reitz where there is Wendy's, Subway, Italian place, and some other stuff. So basically these are the places where you use your declining balance that are not part of the number of meals you have in your plan.

Thanks for the info. I was surpised to hear there's only two dining halls for such a large college. I guess it's best to get a plan that has a lot of flex bucks. I know it's a little early to be concerned about meal plans, but I thought the 150 plan with $300 in flex bucks might be a good idea. Don't know if it's a good value though.

Well two dining halls is plenty actually. Virtually only freshman eat at the dining halls and since not all freshman live on campus and/or have a meal plan, there relatively isn't a large of amount of students the dining halls have to support. Most of the time, the halls are not full, but at particular times in the day, they can get crowded.

150 plan with 300 is not a bad idea, imo.

150,300 is the best in my opinion too

question about verifcation for FASFA. will UF notify you if you're selected?

the site says.

If your application is selected for Verification, or if there are discrepancies on your application information, we will send you an email alerting you to check your “Financial Aid Status” on UF’s ISIS system to determine what documents to provide. Do not submit any documents unless we ask you to do so. Aid funds cannot be disbursed to you until you submit all requested documents and the accuracy of your information has been checked. This can take six weeks or longer.

do u all still reccomend the no meal plan idea if you're not taking a car? how far/how easy is it to get groceries?

im not taking a car, im actually selling mine. i am, however, getting a meal plan at least the first year

Good information here. TTT

note that its 2007

all this info is great, but i wonder how much has changed since 2007. I know Bright Scholars is a much lower allowance now that we’re in 2012, and getting lower every year. I am also wondering if it’s true that when a student has a Prepaid Plan & Bright Scholars, they are less likely to be offered financial aid? do the universities include the Prepaid Plan into the Estimated Family Contribution?
